In addition to my daughters' MINI woes and Nelson's humming Mondeo; another non-breakdown, this time on the Legacy. After getting it back from its 100K service on Monday (with another long list of "essential" things to be done - but that's another saga) I got stuck on a traffic jam on my way home on Tuesday. As it was hot I put my window down, as you do, only to be greeted by the most horrendous graunchy-squealing noise I've heard in years! Muted the stereo, and it sounded like a bit of wire or something had caught itself between the front disc and backplate, the noise disappeared once over about 8-10mph OR when I put the brakes on. Fast-forward to today, and it's dry. (ish) Car out the front on the road, as my driveway is at a bit too steep an angle to be jacking cars up on, in addition to being only a foot wider than the car itself, wheel off and, Voila! It's actually the backplate itself that has been slightly pushed in towards the disc during the pad change. Bent it back a few mm and now, no noise! It's the simple things. Tell you what, though, I forgot just how heavy an 18" alloy actually is!

I was guessing backplate before I read it. Had the same on my Alpina, it's a horrible noise that alarms the wallet.

I was guessing backplate before I read it. Had the same on my Alpina, it's a horrible noise that alarms the wallet. It is, and it did!! My first thought when I heard it was backplate, but it was the on-off sub-walking pace nature of it that made me think it was something else. I think the brakes have floating calipers, so when pressing the brake pedal the calipers moved just enough to separate it from the backplate. It's a minute thing in the scheme of things I suppose, but it felt good to get my hands dirty and actually sort something on my own car myself for a change.

Backplates are a real nuisance and seem to have no negative effect when you remove them.
