Although black over black with blacked-out windows is ever so slightly "gangsta hearse"...

Indeed. The standard CLS Estate looks too much like a hearse, that one takes it to another level. Setting up as Fast Funerals might help with the running costs though.
Thankfully I don't need to make a decision yet, as I'd be torn between diesel and petrol, although it depends on what we do with the Boxster. Driving through France at the weekend, the 535d was near silent, super comfortable and did 44mpg cruising at 130kp/h, which means the range is 650miles +. It's ideal really for the majority of the driving I do, maybe only bettered by something like a 740d as that would add a bit more comfort and luxury.

Yes, I would probably go for a different colour by preference and certainly a lighter interior, such as porcelain & black. A sunroof is also essential.
Alternatively I might just enhance the vintage collection...

I really dislike pale leather, perhaps a memory of being in a Rover 620 Si that had beige leather, beige dash and beige steering wheel - it felt sitting in a sand pit!
Plus with dark leather you don't have to worry about wearing jeans whereas every pale leather covered seat I've ever seen has looked stained and tatty from an early age.

I would always go for the option that gives you pale seats with black carpet and dash top. I like then dark exterior / light interior contrast and dislike coal hole interiors.

Which is why I like the colour scheme my car has.

That's what I had on the 520d (light seats / black carpets and dashboard) but I fancied a change this time (plus my Dads 5 Series has the light seats) and I do appreciate the reduced maintenance. Even if you really look after a light interior, they do look a bit worn when you've done a lot of miles sitting on them. All beige interiors are awful and steering wheels should be black (and round). I wouldn't have gone for an all black interior without the panoramic sunroof, it would have been way too dark. Now I've had it, I wouldn't want to be without it no matter what interior colour scheme I have

By comparison, in January, and bearing in mind the car was not yet two months off the production line and had less than 3k on the clock, I got about 36mpg cruising at around 140kph across France, suggesting a range of round 450 miles. But then my car has a 60l tank and I guess yours has, what 70l?

It's funny because my M5 has black leather, carpets and headlining. The only bright bit is the titanium trim. However when I get into it I'm surprised how light it feels, simply because the window line is lower, it almost feels like sitting in a greenhouse after the 370.....

Yes, it's a 70 litre tank. Car was pretty much fully loaded plus all 4 of us and the OBC was showing 46mpg and a total range of 680 miles, so a real 44.something and usable 650 miles. I think that's good for a big (1900kg) estate. As is 36mpg for a 3.0 petrol, the Boxster would do around 32mpg at similar speeds as long as the roof was up, but it weighs a lot less.

We were only two-up but with the boot and back seat absolutely stuffed to bursting with two weeks' worth of luggage, skiing gear, wine, food, other shopping etc. It was useful having the extra space over the 1-series, but we could have done with a Touring!

I've had a look on the configurator and it's quite interesting. I'll have too keep an eye out for the offers on a 340i.

FYP. A while back a friend had a Newfoundland and a St Bernard that they carted around in an E60 5 series estate. That car lived in the garage with the windows permanently down, I NEVER travelled in it!

Only 41mpg on the return leg, but we were even more loaded up (20 bottles of wine, 4 cases of beer, 2 bottles of champagne, 2 bottles of vodka and some food....and the queue for UK passport control (35mins) plus the Dartford crossing delays plus an ever reducing patience resulting in more (unnecessary) full throttle moves all took their toll. The extra space of the estate was essential and the (std) self levelling rear air suspension was great. It really didn't feel any different to drive, even cutting across from St Neots on a B road. Still felt quick too.

You'd be a bastard if you didn't, think of the children. Exactly. I owe it to them.
As a V8 petrol driver, it is nice to be able to say that I am an eco warrior these days. Plus you're doing your bit to help the poor and oppressed by giving the government more fuel tax. So you'll be a real humanitarian as well.

I visited the dealership yesterday about the 340i shadow edition. They came up with two quotes, £500pcm + £4,405.10 deposit over 48 months on 8k miles a year or £587.97pcm + £500 deposit on the same term. The balance was £16k on each.

I can get a more dog friendly Custom Double cab in van 310 Limited 130 ps auto, silver, 6 leather seats, 230v power, led load lights for £22k + vat. Or a Magnetic 170ps auto with Nav for similar. You can then get a Cayman or an M3 or whatever.

Who told you about the Cayman?! That was the second dealer visit of the day. The Transit is a great van but it's too big for Louisa to drive so she's after something smaller along the lines of the Connect. I'm thinking used Touran or similar and taking the seats out. What's the Magnetic, is that the sporty one?

If it's of use for comparison, on my 440i GC:
List: £48,355 Discount: £9,227 Deposit: £6,000 APR: 2.9% Period: 48 months Mileage: 8k pa GFV: £17,448 Monthly: £396
Broadspeed price for a boggo 340i Shadow Edition Touring: £36,475 Coast2Coast (which gives you a price inc. options): £37,915 (includes metallic, Pro Nav Pack, folding mirrors, and heated seats), a saving of £8,460.
List: £46,375 Discount: £8,500 Deposit: £4,500 APR: 2.9% (BMW's current campaign rate for the 3-series) Period: 48 months Mileage: 8k pa GFV: £15,459 (obtained via the "Buy my BMW now" option on the configurator).
Plug that into either BMW's own calculator in "Buy my BMW" or on www.pcpcal.co.uk and you get: Monthly: £441.
So either you've added a lot more options or your dealer has some pencil-sharpening left in them...

Tell them to get the pencil sharpener out - one of our people has just ordered a 320i MSport X Drive - that's the 2.0 petrol turbo saloon - from Listers in Kings Lynn. They managed to beat their original quote by a reasonable amount after some encouragement (and openly setting them against the local BMW dealer up here!).

The list price with options was £46,395 (Media professional £900, Panoramic roof 1,180 and adaptive LED headlights). Their opening offer seems to be £41,323 taking into account finance incentives. I think I'd want to add a few options to that but they didn't have access to a single 340i or shadow edition to see what it looked like. Annoyingly they don't come in Carbon Black either.

They are surprisingly good to drive. Might be a few petrol turbo ones out there too. Magnetic is the colour. We do do a SportVan Dciv now though.

I'm taking Louisa to look at a Connect Tourneo this week. She wants a used Berlingo but I prefer the Ford not least because it has a far better boot if you delete the third row of seats.

Tanzanite Blue and Carbon Black are pretty similar in my experience, so depends whether you want to spend £845 on paint. Assuming you are ok with one of the normal free metallic options, then optioned with the following (which I would think worth having): Media Pro Pack: £900 Pano Roof: £1,180 Interior comfort pack: £550 Adaptive LED: £745 Windscreen grey shade band: £60 Folding mirrors: £300 Adaptive M Suspension: £750 Digital cockpit: £295 That comes to £49,630 on the BMW configurator. Same spec fed into C2C results in a price of £40,335. Doing the sums again: List: £49,630 Discount: £9,295 Deposit: £4,500 APR: 2.9% (BMW's current campaign rate for the 3-series) Period: 48 months Mileage: 8k pa GFV: £15,914 (obtained via the "Buy my BMW now" option on the configurator). Monthly: £488.
