I love MINIs! Have I mentioned I love MINIs? White was my second choice after black when I had one - it does need the black stripes on the bonnet though. We have a debate in my household. I like the stripes - think it adds interest and character. My wife thinks they are naff.

I agree with you about the stripes, they work with pretty much every colour on a MINI, but if he wants them he will have to pay for them. Do you still think the Union Jack rear lights are naff or have you got used to them?

I am eligible for the forces motability scheme apparently. Best I could find was the mini classic five door in 1.5 or 2.0 petrol. The 1.5 is great. That’s what we have. I really like it. Another vote for the 1.5 from a satisfied owner. Same engine as in the current BMW 1-Series.

They would go down well in a certain South Lanarkshire town just of the M74 I suspect!

I didn’t like them, but I have eventually come around to them. And now that the car is in Italy, as a Brit I quite like the feature.

I flip-flopped on the stripes and we had the same debate as Mr V Mrs racing. When we got our Mini I thought I would get bonnet stripes. Mrs PG wasn't sure. After a few days we decided it looked better without them.
I love the rear Union Jack lights - really clever design. I've seen a picture online of the new Mini due at the end of this year and the rear lights are now triangular. Wonder if they'll still be Union Flags in there? Hope so.

Well, this particular MINI adventure is over.
I don't understand how, but he's managed to damage it badly enough for the insurance company to declare it a write off. Somehow he's got it against a concrete post and panicked and made it a whole lot worse by getting stuck. They have valued it at £7,500 (not bad as I paid £8,200 nearly 12 months ago), so the cost must be that less whatever the remaining value is. I'm amazed it's that bad, but I haven't seen it.
He's absolutely gutted, but at least he hasn't put it on its roof in a ditch and there aren't any injuries.
He's had a loan car from the repair place for a few days, but as it has been declared a total loss that's been collected immediately and he's on his own. He can walk into work, so not a major issue in the very short term,

Oh no! Sorry to hear that. The write-off is no surprise, we've had enough examples of this first-hand on here. My brother's Mazda 3 was recently written off after (and I kid you not) a hornet sheltered in his air vent when he hadn't used the car for a few weeks, and came out and flew into his face when he switched the heating on! He left the road at low speed, and damaged the front corner, wing, and door scraping down a post, he was amazed it was written off.
Sounds like the value offered is good! I was at a BVRLA event last week and the head of CAP pricing, british car auctions, and others were there - prices are back up from the dip they had in Q4 23 and likely to firm up.
Hope the process of getting back into something decent is easy...

Having been through all the hassle with the i-pace and getting it repaired, i'd be quite happy with a payout like that. You might want to look at similar cars for sale on Autotrader because if they are considerably more than £7,500 you can argue for a higher figure because you are not in the motor trade and can't buy at trade prices. It might not get you all the way to the cost of a replacement but it usually gets you somewhere closer.

Prices vary a fair bit, but I think it's a fair offer. There's a 6 month newer one with similar miles only 8 miles from my house up for £7,495. No parking sensors and the part leather I don't like quite as much, but it's got the visual boost radio and a heated windscreen as compensation. Only problem is that it's black...but it's not my car. He might want to get something closer to home as it could be quicker (I'm in London for the Rugby this weekend and away from home most of next), but we'll see.

Sorry to hear this. Worth buying it back and getting it repaired privately using some used parts, if it really is not damaged very badly?

Sorry to hear this. Worth buying it back and getting it repaired privately using some used parts, if it really is not damaged very badly? Thank you. I don’t know how badly damaged it is Chris and if a similar one can be bought with the insurance payout then it’s not worth the hassle / risk.

Sorry to hear this. Worth buying it back and getting it repaired privately using some used parts, if it really is not damaged very badly? This might seem logical, but one the main reasons insurance premiums are through the roof and repairs taking months, is that parts and garage availability for crash repairs are incredibly stretched. They're also charging way more, because they can. So you only end up onboarding the same issue as the insurer avoided in writing off the car. Makes sense if doing it yourself, or through a known party, otherwise probably not worth the hassle....

Bugger. If it's any consolation, I put a car in a ditch and on its roof when I was 18.
It seems insurers just aren't wanting to repair things these days, but at least you have a reasonable offer.
I hope his new insurance isn't too horrendous.

Definitely better than putting it on its roof!
Just based on a quick search, the insurance isn’t too bad at all, helped by him being 22. Just under £1,500 without a black box (£1,220 with). It’s less than a year since he got the car, so.zero no claims to lose!

Settlement figure agreed, should be paid in 3-5 working days. Bank of Dad is providing a ‘bridging loan’ as the next MINi adventure starts on Friday when I collect this:

We did briefly discuss other options, but he had a nearly new Corsa for a few days and wasn’t impressed by the way it drove. Difficult to beat the 1.5 MINI Cooper at this price point.

Looks good. I'd prefer silver wheels but then I'm an old git not a young-about-town-man. If my squinty eyes are right, it looks like a few nice options were added, like full width sat nav screen and dual climate

They would be, but he likes to them. I’d never buy a black car either, but it’s got a nice amount of metallic to it and does look smart.
As well as the 17” wheels, it’s got part leather, Visual Boost radio with idrive (non Nav), heated windscreen and auto dimming mirror. It’s got the Chili pack which the other one had, which includes a whole load of things including climate control, cruise, MF wheel etc. The first to thing he asked me when I sent him the Autotrader link was whether it had cruise control….
The other one had rear parking sensors, which is pretty rare and this one doesn’t have. The colour screen does make it feel more modern and the seats are in really good condition, most I’ve seen have really saggy leather sections.
It’s just had a major service and MOT and I’m getting two new front tyres. The ones it has have plenty of tread, but ones a Yokohama something and the other is a cheap brand. It’s got Dunlops on the rear, they agreed mismatched fronts weren’t a good idea so offered to swap them to the rear, but I’d rather have brand new * rated (non run flats) on there so a deal has been done.

Does that count as triple black?
Somehow it strikes me as an unusual colour for a mini but it looks quite good.
How old is it?

Yes, triple black but thankfully it doesn’t have privacy glass as well,
It was registered end September 2015.

Looks like a very good result out of an unfortunate event.
Agreed that it is difficult to consider anything else in the class and price point after having had a MINI adventure.

Well, he’s broken his insurance claim virginity Glad no one was hurt: we had all sorts of horrors as teens in terms of maiming and deaths in accidents. I also recall Marlene witnessing a young driver going into the trees on the Witley- Milford road years ago at the national limit as a minimum. Car was smacked to bits but the boy was unscathed. Agreed: Minis and 500s are default young peoples’ cars these days. That’s a nice looking one. Mine still aren’t interested in driving
