NFC is about 4 or 5 times faster than barcode. This is based in fractions of a second but one of the reasons TfL refuses to accept barcode is that those milliseconds when added together mean the entrance gates are closed too long to meet their safety case on busy stations.
Also the chip in your new card will have spare sectors on it which can be used to store other info other than your club card account details. Barcode is also less secure and as your club card points are effectively monetised any risk reduction is important.

I've got all these loyalty card in an app on my phone which allows them to be scanned but save me carrying a mountain of plastic. I too got my new Tesco Club Card but I really don't want to have to carry it about with me all the time just to use the contactless feature..

But a barcode can be read from further away and so gets those milliseconds back again in the reduced hand movements. Also, the new card comes with two keyring versions that only have a barcode on them, so if I only use one of those there's no upgrade, is there? You are kidding? Barcode is far more susceptible to misread, refusal and reread than a chip with a single set of code on it. The sub-card barcode keyrings look like the cost of the chips is too high or the chip plus aerial is too big for the smaller card.

There are several standards for barcodes, GS1 and UDI being just 2.... we're having great fun at work (not) trying to sort product labelling out with the correct bar codes
