It doesn't look like the finished product (to these eyes) as Michael says, it would be the first M car in a long time to have no M Grilles on the side wings. I really hope that it doesn't look like this. The last performance combustion BMW with a manual to potentially be offered in the UK, and it would look like this.

I fully understand that progress brings change, what I cannot understand is the sheer ugliness of the modern automotive art, in more than just the case of BMW. Why is it?

The official pictures. Fractionally better in a different colour and the rear view taken at an angle, plus the arches balance things out a bit, but it could have looked great…..

Still looks like a gash 80s bodywork effort created in some greaser’s garage.

I don't dislike it. I mean not enough to actually put me off buying one however it is now an expensive car. 65K with a bit of spec is it? Bring back the days you could get the old M2 for 10% down and £500 a month.
Heavy too, 1800KG is getting a little out of control and I understand in Germany if you want the Manual they are charging about £500 which is a new one. Terrible colour palette to chose form also . Why do manufacturers think we want these pastel shades?
But what else can you buy that competes and its a lot more interesting then an RS3 or A45S

If you add the track pack which has the carbon roof, carbon seats and a couple of other things, you are looking at a good bit over £70K. With the £ tanking it might not be long before the price starts to creep up even further. The limited colour pallet is apparently because it is built in Mexico! I don't quite understand what that has to do with anything.
Like Martin, I think it is an opportunity missed and changes like the horizontal grill slats just annoy me. No doubt the designer will say it emphasises the car's wide stance whereas I think it just emphasises the designer's lack of talent.

Another car launched with black wheels. I was hoping we were getting out of that fad.

It’s an uglier M240i.
And with a crap range of colours: basically black, white, red, a hideous powder blue (think baby clothing or sun-bleached Smurf) and another of those dismal polyfiller shades of grey.
Thanks but no thanks.

Maybe they are keeping the metallic colours for the £5K extra Competition model.
The old car, whilst not being a stunner, is streets ahead of the new one.

That’s quite unpleasant but nothing unexpected from BMW these days. I thought the earlier pictures were photoshopped as I could see evidence of a clone stamp tool but it turns out that was a badly filled towing eye cover. The red one has the same.

The 'standard' M2 isn't great but given that there are relative few options in this class it's not that ugly that I'd say no immediately. I'd rather have a 3 litre 6 pot than some overheated 2 litre 4 pot. I'd just get mine in black and hope that somebody starts selling a set of replacement grilles with vertical vanes.

I'd rather have a 3 litre 6 pot than some overheated 2 litre 4 pot. I'd just get mine in black and hope that somebody starts selling a set of replacement grilles with vertical vanes. Precisely. Now seeing the official images of it, the M2 doesn’t offend me as much as I thought it would have. Black Sapphire would be the only plausible colour for me, a colour I have always quite liked – it looks like a darker grey in the sun. Since the 1M, the baby M-Car has been boxy in appearance – this one just continues with that. I’m surprised at how different it is to other M Cars. No M grilles on the side wings, and the sideskirts and lower bumper areas painted in body-colour. That’s something that I don’t like about the M4, in any colour other than black it looks unfinished. Prefer the sound of the S58 compared to its predecessor as well. Dreadful choice of colours, as all baby M cars have had. Price is sort of academic. It starts at 61k, but few will leave the factory like that. It reminds me of the M135i in 2012 that came out at a fiver under 30k. A good headline, but it was just that. It is a shame that if you want the carbon buckets, they are only part of a package of other things - other things that you might not necessarily want. The manual is actually optional and costs more than the auto. At least its available in the UK.

Even the speed stripe looks wrong, should have started at the headlights, not part way down the front wing.

It looks a lot better then the red one that was posted earlier but that not saying much. It looks like they've stolen the rear spoiler from the Alfa 156.
Looking at the original car it only really needs the bumpers to be smoothed off to make it quite attractive.
