^^ Yep - I can't think of any other famous GB athletes called Sally.
She was a bit full of herself when I rubbed shoulders with her back in the late 1980s (this was before she switched to the 400m hurdles), but I think she has mellowed a lot these days and there was a really good interview with her earlier this year where she looked back on her career with a lot of perspective.
She was born in 1966 so she's 56 now and has much more experience of life. Almost every elite athlete will be very self-centred and self-absorbed out of necessity in order to compete at the highest level, and let's not forget that Sally Gunnell was an Olympic champion, World champion, European champion, Commonwealth champion, and World Record holder.
Bravo. And she's an Essex girl who took genuine delight in her achievements, rather than being a dull media-trained sort.

On the Britannia farewell tour we were invited to a private ceremony dockside where the band from the ship played on the dock. We were in seats about 20m from the ship and the queen was on the deck - looked delighted by the band's playing. A friend was amongst those onboard for the earlier dinner and the queen and D of E mingled with guests. My friend was asked by D of E what he did. "I make ice cream from my own herd of cows" (quite a successful small enterprise). "Oh, is that a profitable exercise?" asked the D of E. Not wanting to sound immodest, my friend said, "Well yes I suppose so." "Suppose?? Good God man don't you ever look at your books?" came the reply!
Been a lot closer to her son-in-law and my own son-in-law literally bumped into Prince William when working in an MOD place without noticing who he was, "sorry mate" he said, and the reply was something like: don't worry - he didn't realise who he was until he'd walked a little further away and could see him properly.
