I have a trickle charger now but I have to connect to the battery as the 12v charge port is an add on and inactive unless the ignition switch is on. I have to crawl about underneath the rear seat.

The battery on our Mini has just died. A 2016 car, with about 32,000 miles of short journeys, so perhaps to be expected. I saw prices north of £350, but have it booked into Halfords for thier top of the range AGM five year warranty battery for £179 fitted.

Mike, if you have a Ctek charger they do a permanent battery connection with extension to save the crawling about. I use them on the Elan and 928 because the batteries are tucked away

I saw prices north of £350, but have it booked into Halfords for thier top of the range AGM five year warranty battery for £179 fitted. Our 65 plate Clubman (stop start, so has to be AGM) just needed a new battery. Turned out to be a bit of a faff - local tyre and battery place ordered one and lent me a power pack whilst it was on its way. Took it in the next day and the new battery hadn't arrived - by then it would only start with the power pack. Next day the battery had arrived. Bit of head scratching with me and the tech to get the old battery out - air scoop and air box had to be removed, induction pipe moved out of the way, three pieces of scuttle trim to remove and finally there was access to remove the battery. Then it turns out the replacement was too short! despite being the correct spec and, as it's held in place by a clamp on the base flange rather than a strap over the battery, it couldn't be fitted - so put it all back and the tech gets on the phone to sort it out with the suppliers. I go down for the third time and there's a four car queue all having new tyres all round so I dismantle it all and fit the new battery myself. £115, so I don't know what Halfords are on. Then I find out the car needs to be coded for the new battery - otherwise the car 'thinks' it has a less than perfect battery and won't fully charge it leading to shortened battery life. Luckily the independent I use for service is right next door, so I pop in and one of their proprietors grabs a 'magic box' and reprograms it for a charge of £0. It's so much easier to swap a battery in the Minor!

So I got back to the car today for the first time since 10 September and when I turned on the electrics, it duly flashed up a “battery low” indication but did actually start first time without recourse to the charger. Cranked a little longer and more laboriously than usual but only slightly.
Quite impressed.

Herself took the Mini to Halfords, where the 12 year old 'fitter' gave up on the job after 20 minutes of fumbling around under the bonnet. They still took the money, on my credit card, which meant that I had to detour via Leamington Spa the next day to present my card for a refund. Meanwhile, I went online to the AA (not a member) and ordered a battery through them for about £20 more than Halfords. They arrived at our house the next day and fitted it in about 10 minutes. Lesson learned. Get the adults on the job.

I know. I drove it around for half an hour and did wobble. It’s such a great car. The Macan doesn’t look or sound half as good.

Could you pension it off to a family member, then reclaim it in a few years as a young timmer classic?

Has this thread cast a jinx on me? First the Mini needs a new battery and today I had to get one for the Elgrand £108.00

That does seem the case on occasion.

I had a Macan T as a courtesy car today when my Cayman was in for its first service. All I can say is that I hope the Macan GTS is a nicer drivers' car than the T. The interior is very nice and smart, but the car itself didn't make me think 'this is a Porsche' from the point of view of its dynamics. I echo Bryan's thought of seeing if you can keep the BMW in the family somewhere/somehow!
