So the old mans now 82 years old. 6 months ago he went out and bought an ex demo Golf Gti in that lovely deep metallic red. Lovely car with all the bits but with technology that even I thought highly irritating.
Unfortunately a few weeks ago he went to the lake district to see a mate of his and decided that the stone wall that was in his way should no longer be standing and ploughed straight through it writing off his car.
So for his next car I've told him he needs to get sensible and look for something boring that will do the job rather then make him feel younger then he is.
I haven't read a What Car or Autocar for a while so my knowledge cars that are the equivalent of the elasticated trouser or Velcro shoe is limited. A few years ago the answer was a Honda Jazz
Now this is a man who is in denial of being 82, with a car history anyone would be proud of so if you can think giffer car with enough tinsel to disguise its gifferness all the better.
Any ideas?
No budget as such but something new or upto a couple of years old.

I'm hope I'm knocking down walls in a GTi when I'm 82! Does he want something more sensible? Was the crash related to the performance of the GTi?

Old people in autos are even more dangerous!
If he feels younger than 82 and the performance of the car wasn't the cause (after all, he could have done it in a Honda Jazz), then why not just get another GTi and enjoy it.

The Golf performace wasn't the cause but I think the general size and complexity of the car probably didn't help. He's also now a doddery driver and has to come to terms with that.
in his head he still thinks he's in his 50's but he's slowed down a hell of a lot over the last few years and I think its time embraced the higher seating position and small footprint and auto box of something square but not boring as such.
Thoughts on my side were something like a Kia Stonic or VW T-Cross but can't hink of many other small cars on stilts.
I think Auto only would be best.

Old duffers car ? Sell him your XC90. Haha, funny from the man with the RAV 4! I resisted the Volvo comment, but did start typing it.... I think the XC 90 is more the UK equivalent of a soccer mom / school run vehicle, but the RAV4 definitely qualifies To be fair, I was thinking about an XC40, but assume that's a bit big? What about a Puma?

Actually the A-Class link has helped as they do a GLA or B don't they which might avoid the whiff of old person

I do quite like the Puma. This is quite useful if size is important…you can compare options side by side or look at one and it shows comparable cars Using the Puma as a start point www.automobiledimension.com/model/ford/pumaThe GLB is a bit longer than the GLA, but looks more like a mini truck than an inflated hatchback. Not sure if that’s more or less old duffer though?!

My Dad, in his infinite wisdom, after 6 knee operations and retiring from the Post Office on a tidy pension, decided to buy a brand new Ford Puma ST. Manual.
After 20 odd years of manual Honda Jazzes. He refuses to buy an auto, despite having both his knees replaced multiple times. I bought my first auto at 38 and won't go back to a manual now for a daily driver.

The company I used to work for had two directors in their 80's - retired and only popped in to show off their cars, see our new cars or attend the AGM - they had things like an XK8, Mini Coopers, and the last car one of them owned was the last MR2 (the tiny convertible one).

There was a very good BTR-60 on that site too which would make mince of any parking space obstruction with loads of space and a good campervan conversion too.

I went in a colleagues Puma recently and it's not a bad car but does feel a size down from the Golf in the front cabin which is worth bearing in mind as he might find it a bit small. The tech was somewhat simpler than the mk8 Golf though which is definitely a good thing.
Merc GLA could be a good shout but the current model looks even more tech heavy than the Golf. Perhaps a high spec previous model might be better

My dad had a sequence of autos and had no issues but when he changed from a Meriva to a Citroen C3 it became clear that his cognitive abilities had severely deteriorated. I think the C3 might've been an automated manual but it was the different gear selection layout that confused him, from memory the choices were in a cross layout rather than backwards and forwards. As a result we realised his dementia was more advanced than we suspected and the change of car hastened the end of his driving career!
