And the MPs might 'just' get £82k basic, but they also get an utterly amazing total remuneration package. In my place we get the minimum auto-enrolment pension and 26 days holiday a year.

Ian Blackford is being quiet about his £1217 per hour second role. That's probably the only time that Ian Blackford is quiet about anything!

Being an MP isn’t a 9-5 job, though. It’s very long hours, weekends and a lot of time spent from home. I don’t think they’re sufficiently well paid but I don’t think the structure of expenses is correct either.

Most senior managerial jobs aren't 9 to 5 and no weekends either!

Ian Blackford is being quiet about his £1217 per hour second role. What job does Ian Blackford do to get him that kind of pay?

I wonder what BoJos rate for his Telegraph column was - £250k p.a. for something that he probably lashed up in 10 minutes each week

And to the point about hourly pay to the worker versus hourly charge-out rates by the company - the story on the BBC website suggests that Mr Cox was paid circa £1000 per hour (edit for clarity: the amounts he had declared as earnings and the hours worked according to the story), rather than that being the amount paid to the firm and not all of it going to him. Back in 1994 I was being charged out at £85 per hour by my accountancy firm, whilst actually being paid just under £11 gross per hour. Nice work for KPMG Bristol at the time - but that's just how it works, as Jonny rightly says. I'm not defending what he did, as I don't see how you can be an MP from the other side of the world. Even using remote working. But isn't Cox a barrister? The charge out rates for senior barristers, especially in complex corporate cases, are absolutely eye-watering. From my experience of seeing bills from them, they make the £1,000 per hour rates of partners in Big 6 accountancy firms seem almost reasonable. Only slightly "almost" mind.

We’re using a very good barrister at the moment and I don’t think he’d pick up the phone for £1000 an hour. He’s worth it though.

I don’t know what MPs are supposed to do other than listen to constituents issues and (dependant on this issue) then either deploy a thick ear to a council grunt or raise the issue (ineffectually usually) in Parliament, or with another managing body where they are generally ignored.
You get a few vocal ones who will challenge Government nonsense (and get nowhere), but in general, they default to the party line irrespective of how nonsensical it may be – which means they are generally useless (IMO).
I detest big Government and I want as little state intrusion in most matters other than ensuring the basics work – so I guess that means I want my MP to an educated, smart and shrewd operator who is bereft of fervent ideology and actually has some influence within the machinations of the state to tell all and sundry to pipe down and bugger off (apart from fixing roads, building hospitals, etc).
How much is one of them ?

£82k, plus loads of time off and a generous pension.

You're dead right though. Just be smart, shrewd, good at what you do and sufficiently experienced/confident to realise what's actually important and what isn't.
