I believe Max will try to get back to his standard form and lose out. I hope he has the penalty this time out and he learns a lesson. I also hope he does not put another driver out of the gp.

That was one hell of a mess up from Merc. I've never seen a restart with just one car on the grid. Would it not have made more sense to get all the cars changed to slicks before the restart? I'm sure there's rules which say they're not allowed to change tyres during the black flag period but having one car on the grid looked utterly ridiculous and surely a complete absence of common sense. Maybe its the issue of allowing cars to elect to start from the pits. If there's nothing wrong with the car it should be on the grid.

I would have suggested they do that but, in the end it made for a better race. This is an issue with convoluted rules and regs, those who keep their head on do well and catch anyone napping out. Merc were more than a little complacent.

Without going all Gladiator but were you not Entertained? Its the conditions we love as we know its going to make a few look stupid and ok this time it was only Hamilton looking stupid but he does seem to rely too much on his team rather then what his commonsense is telling him. What to do about Bottas? Only a tiny mistake but it had major consequences for so many teams and drivers. Its an odd thing for him to get fired over as obviously taking out 2 Red Bulls would be ideal for Mercedes. I think its too late for him now to get his head in the right space and needs to make room for someone else. Does Christian Horner have a point about budget caps and unexpected costs. If a driver from another team has found to be at fault for an accident like Silverstone or Hungry should that not go down on Mercedes costs rather then Red Bull? A full rebuild on Max's car, new engine and gearbox for Perez while the Merc gets a bit of suspension and a new nose. Its an interesting discussion point that will have impact the further we go through the season.

A McLaren wing on a Red Bull, a Merc nose on an Aston Martin. If A Haas looked as though it was going to crash into you, it might be better to crash on your own!

I stand by my remarks, a start and a re-start should be just that - no pulling into the pits on the "formation" lap unless it is because of a technical issue that requires attention. Changing tyres is not IMHO a good enough reason to fail to take up your grid place.
As for the cost of damage repairs, yes I also think that they should be excluded from the cost cap, but in practice how would you administer it? Older-spec parts could be replaced by newer-spec ones during a rebuild, lifed components the same, "free" replacement on offer. So a tough one to call

There is an issue with the cost cap and component caps having an unfair effect on teams involved in non fault collisions. An interesting point made by Red Bull regarding the grid penalty for Bottas being 5 places is that they'll likely need to put a fourth power unit in both their cars with each incurring a 10 place grid penalty as a result. I know that penalties are based on the incident not its consequences but I can understand how Red Bull feel hard done by.

It was because, unlike the actual race start, the formation lap was classed as a race lap therefore they were all in their rights to dive into the pits. Having just one car starting might well have been an interesting talking point but it made F1 race management look all a bit silly. If Lewis had taken it upon himself to pit too there'd have been no one on the grid and the race director would have a face full of egg!

I thought the race was fantastic. It had drama and intrigue from start to finish. People will always complain about modern F1, including me. This season’s races have consistently been fantastic; great racing, great rivalries, tense until the finish.
The battle between Alonso and Hamilton was superb. It featured two great drivers, giving each other just about enough room, whilst trying to intimate each other at the same time. That battle for me, only illustrated where Verstappen sometimes gets it wrong. Hamilton knew overtaking into turn four wouldn’t happen, Alonso knew he had the line, but it didn’t stop Hamilton trying to make Alonso bale out, as he did with perhaps a more gullible Tsunoda. But Hamilton didn’t put his car in a position where Alonso was going to wipe him out. Hamilton knew who he was racing, and so should have Verstappen at Silverstone. What I noticed is how relatively tentative Verstappen was. He was a bit apprehensive when overtaking Mick Schumacher. Mick was fighting for that position in a manner that would made his Dad proud. It was good to see some fighting spirit with Mick, with how irrelevant Haas are this season apart from crashes; it might be the only meaningful TV time that Haas get. Verstappen was also cautious around George Russell in the closing laps. Nobody wants that sort of accident to happen at Silverstone, but if it’s made him consider risks to a greater extent, it won’t harm him.
The principle issue with the budget cap is that F1 is still very expensive. Just because the extent of the aero development has been lessened, everything else is still expensive. I don’t think a budget cap is needed. The regulations should naturally prohibit the excessive aero development. F1 is still an arms race to an extent, and putting an artificial cap on what is a very costly sport doesn’t make much sense. I hope the budget cap makes more sense next year, with the new cars and cleaner bodywork. The cars of today have become like they were in 2007-2008, with ugly aero bits sprouting from everywhere. The 2017 regulations resulted in the cars being five seconds a lap faster, not sure where that obsession came from, but ever since then the spending on pointless aero just went back to the bad old days.
One of the biggest problems with the stewarding at the moment is the presumed responsibility of the car on the inside of a corner. Whether it’s a slow or a fast corner, if the driver on the outside wants to fight the position, its natural the car on the inside is going to understeer slightly, enough to potentially make contact. But for me, that is the inherent risk of either not yielding or trying to pass around the outside. It’s a choice. We don’t need penalties for it. Transferring responsibility for stewarding from FIA to FOM could make a positive difference. End the compensation culture, the obsession with fairness and questionable stewarding panels. The ultimate penalty is car damage, the drivers don’t go out there trying to create accidents. Drivers will always go for moves, they always have, the moment they don’t, we don’t have a racing championship anymore.
