We got an air con unit from b and q last year. It was an ex display , with the remote missing . It was about £500 and we got it for £150. It’s too noisy to sleep with when on, but it’s great to put on a hour before bed
When we move I will no doubt look at a fixed unit in the bedroom. I wouldn’t mind it on the wall - once’s like Worcester look really smart

I had a look last night, Samsung do one with "23,000 micro air holes, so there is no unpleasant feeling of cold wind on your skin" and the latest Bosch ones do look pretty tidy. Fixed price next day installation from Boxt, but I suspect they are a bit more expensive (£2.2-2.4k for a 3.5KW unit, around £2k for a 2.5KW but that's for smaller rooms)

Never used boxt. They do well on trust pilot though.

Just installed a ceiling fan today. Ordered from a UK website of a German company and shipped from Spain. Go figure. It's virtually silent and doesn't half move some air. I've had the crappy DIY shed ones before and they are OK, but noisy.

Never used boxt. They do well on trust pilot though. I used them for a new boiler when ours went 7 days after bringing a baby home in early March last year. The local guy tried to repair it, but it lasted a day and he said it needed replacing, but he couldn't do it for several days. I ordered one from Boxt (which was better and cheaper, £2,500 all in for a Worcester Bosch 30KW with a 10 year warranty) just before 3pm and it was installed early afternoon the next day. Really slick process from start to finish. I completed a template by adding pictures, they called me straight away to check everything, the plumber (really good guy, works for himself) arrived at 8am and got on with removing the old boiler, doing the prep work etc and everything arrived mid morning. It was more complex than expected because the gas pipe had been reduced somewhere in the wall and the last part wasn't big enough to give the right flow rate, but he dug out the pipe (wasn't easy finding it) and changed it, would have been finished for lunchtime otherwise. Had to get our decorator in to fill the holes, but I didn't care as we had heat again! I'd have no hesitation using them again and have a service contract with them for the boiler.

As Gary said, money well spent. Even after a couple of days of hot weather I was happy that it had paid for itself. We have a couple of comfy armchairs in our bedroom, so it's a nice place to sit when it's really warm. My office is on the same floor as our bedroom, so I can wheel the unit in when I'm working, but how well that will go down when Lindsay is working from home in the Dining Room I'm not sure.....but it's too big to be lugging up and down stairs and I was in the office first, so it's mine! Ordered. Arriving tomorrow - just in time for the weather to warm up again. Hopefully it will prove a good purchase - thanks for the tip. I hope it arrived, works and transformed your life over the last couple of days?! We left ours on all night Sat/Sun, in silent mode which isn't all that silent, but quiet enough to sleep through without any problems. Presumably because it's 'white noise'.

I bought a cheaper Amcor one after reading this thread. Noisy as hell but does a nice job of getting a room down to a comfortable temp before bed. Seems like £270!well spent even if it is only a couple of weeks a year.

Yes, it's not as silent as I expected/hoped. With the a/c on, it's certainly noisier than the wall-mounted sort my in-laws have - and the three speed settings seem to be loud/louder/loudest.
But the fan setting is much quieter and it was definitely a godsend when I got back to London last night.
It was 25.5 degrees on the ground floor and fully 30 degrees in our bedroom on the top (second) floor. Took about an hour but the pinguino got the room down to a much more bearable 25, provided I kept the bedroom door shut (given rest of the second floor also baking).
Turned it off and went to sleep - awoke in the small hours feeling hot, but at that point I found the quieter fan setting more than sufficient to cool the room and allow me to go back to sleep.
The only downside I can see is how heavy it is - 30kg! I fondly imagined something I could easily move around the house. But staggering down our narrow twisting stairs with such a heavy and bulky unit isn't going to be a regular activity.

I don’t mind the aircon noise. In fact I’m sure it helps me drift off.

But staggering down our narrow twisting stairs with such a heavy and bulky unit isn't going to be a regular activity. They're a lot louder than the wall mounted units because the compressor on those is outside rather than in the room with you. We slept fine with the aircon on the lowest setting, which is enough to easily maintain the temperature of the room. There's a lot of heat soak from the house when it's warm day after day, so it's better to let it run on low and keep the temperature down. Our room was 29c and it got it down to 22c fairly quickly. They are heavy. I was persuaded to take it upstairs (our bedroom is on the 1st floor) to the little mans room (2nd floor) and it wasn't bad going up, but it was very awkward coming back down!

No need, the dining room is at the front of the house on the opposite side to where the sun is other than first thing and it's much cooler than my office, so she was fine and happy for me to have it (small price to pay for marital bliss maybe? ) She would rather we get one for the little ones bedroom, but as it was only going to be warm for a couple of days I moved ours upstairs for two hours before his bedtime then moved it back. We'll revisit that one another time.
