Autocar have a news item on the new Hyundia Ioniq 5. We've had a thread on it already, so this isn't about that car. But more about aspects of the design that put me off ever wanting one. The interior. It reminds me way too much of an Austin Allegro. Which to my mind is no place I want go spend any time. Pretty much the same feelings I have about the VW ID3 interior. And that set me thinking about the way that car interiors seem to be going. We seem to be back in the 1970's. This move towards no buttons and screens plus electric motors is leaving interiors and dashboards very empty. Like low end cars were in bygone days. Better cars gave lots of dials and buttons, big centre consoles, a feeling of being in a cockpit. Now it's just acres of plastic and very little to look at. Even the steering wheels are ugly. Spot the difference -

^ That’s a great interior.

I think that is the apple generation. I know, very sad and probably not reversible.

The Allegro does look more visually appealing to me but I’m old. Like I love the library at my mum’s house but in reality it’s unchanged in decades despite moving around the world. It could all be online in the cloud and that room used for some other purpose but it wouldn’t feel like it does.

Massive touchscreens = automatic no-no

At least the Ioniq 5 has a separate area for climate controls so it’s not all on the main screen. I really don’t like the wheel, but the rest is OK when the interior is black.
Overall I quite like the Ioniq 5. Hyundai have taken advantage of a proper EV platform (its huge inside) and not tried to make it look like a generic SUV plus it has fast charging and a decent mix of performance and range.

I currently have with me the latest Skoda Octavia. By and large it's not a bad car, but my word the touchscreen is shit. It's just confusing as heck to use.

If only the tailgate on the latest Octavia Wagon was near-vertical instead of lifestle angled :-(
