I think having assets of £1 million does make you quite rich, and having assets of £10 million definitely makes you rich in my opinion. But I agree with the general sentiment that just because you have got £1 million-plus, it doesn't mean that the state needs to take some of it away from you on an annual basis. Especially if that includes the value of your principal private residence, and your pensions.
It depends how that £1 million is made up or how it came about. A retired couple living in a family home might suddenly become millionaires because of house price rises and then die of the stress of suddenly being liable for additional taxes when they’re on a fixed income (their pension). They would never have had to be rich or live a wealthy lifestyle just because an asset became valuable beyond their control. A million quid is just a four bed family house where I live and we’re not all flying around in private jets, walking around draped in gold and not having to go to work every day.

Mandelson described the labour general election performance over the last 40 odd years as lose, lose, lose, lose, Blair, Blair, Blair, lose, lose lose, lose.

• Introduce a 1% annual "millionaire's tax" on wealth and assets above £1m - including property, land, pensions and other assets .I’d imagine if these jokers gained control the economy would look like Zimbabwe’s and a loaf of bread would cost a million quid.

I completely agree - the Greens generally seem to think that capitalism is the root of all evil so it basically gives the extreme left/Communism a disguise to pedal their ideas. If their main concern is the environment they don't need to take us all back to the horse and cart and have People's Assemblies (no doubt where they will decide who should be stoned next week). Communism and Green do not need to go together and in fact, as can be seen from the largest such country in the world, they don't really care about green with their coal fired power stations and building of military bases on coral atolls.

It just occurred to me that in the current taxation climate you can be entitled to refunds under some circumstances so what do the Greens propose happens if the stock market crashes and/or house prices take a dive and suddenly your £1m plus becomes something like £750k. Remember last year the stock market took a spectacular dive shortly before the tax year end which would, presumably, be the wealth calculation date.
Additionally you can see from current tax regimes (worldwide) that those with the most money are generally the ones who pay the least tax as a percentage due to 'schemes'. Are the Greens going to close all these loopholes at the start or as they go because if the latter it's already too late!
Idiots.

I declined to vote. There was no candidate or party I felt any urge to vote for. I was mildly tempted by Count Binface for London Mayor but that was about the limit of it.

It looks like the left of the Labour party are still trying to wrestle control whilst remaining completely deluded that a fairly serious left party has any chance of being elected. They may not have liked the Tony Blair period but it was much more electable than any Corbyn led party. Given that Blair and Brown plundered pension schemes, sold off the gold and brought the economy to its knees I would have expected the left to feel that was a job well done!

I went through the candidates with W2.1 and to be honest there was literally no candidate worth the pencil graphite especially when the leading mayoral chaps were impossible to warm to.

Likewise, could not be bothered to erode the soles of my shoes any further for a bunch of self interested gas bags. Especially when what they say is meaningless pontification.

Didn't bother with our local elections for councillors. None of the candidates leaflets through the door said anything about some of the biggest issues locally post pandemic. It was all about how they'd stop some big housing developments, fill in potholes and fund the opening of the tip 7 days a week. All policies to appeal to the elderly population who are miffed about all the new houses springing up and not being able to take their rubbish to the dump on Thursdays and Fridays.
I have serious concerns about the lack of support for the younger generations in terms of schooling and mental health services which have been cut to the bone. None of the candidates said they'd try to reopen the family centre in our village which was closed due to budget cuts earlier this year. (Justified by reduced usage over the last 12 months even though it was closed due to Covid for 5 of them!). No mention of extra amenities for the new housing so that the people moving in are not adding pressure to existing facilities and actually have a school to send their kids to now that the current village primary is at capacity.

Our Tory candidate jumped on the pothole bandwagon too.
For me the impact was severely reduced due to her being pictured next to her BMW i3 and dressed like a bit of a tree hugger so I pigeonholed her as a bit of a green, albeit with a Tory slant of course.
