Ho hum..... The article references the 1986 Lotus 98t and suggests if you get the chance, you should drop everything to see/hear it. In 1986 I went to a test day at Brands Yup, that's Senna in the Lotus and I'm standing just inside the Armco, no other safety measures, I'm just a few feet from the edge of the track because this is before H&S became entwined in everything. If you were at a test day with a camera then you were bound to be a "real fan" who knew the risks and knew where it was safe to go. I can't believe that it's nearly 14 years since I scanned the print to get an electronic copy !

Great picture there Chris.
Great article. I think part of the problem now, the cars have become so driveable and consistent for the drivers. They are handling 1000bhp machines, but they don't look like monsters. Too many clever engineers have put paid to that. Its a bit odd, and goes against F1's engineering excellence, we need the cars to handle a bit crap. The turbo hybrids looked edgy back in 2014, but with each year, the driveability and downforce has got better.
I hope the 2022 downforce slash works. It will hopefully visually look busier as there will be increased sliding about.

I think F1 cars have followed a similar path to road cars in that the advance of time has improved everything about them, made them quicker and easier to drive.
I had a quick look for something from the mid-80s that I could compare to a car I know and came up with the Rover SD1 Vitesse versus my old 320d. Vitesse has 190BHP, 320d has 184, both get to 60 in around 7.5 seconds but the BMW is 200kg heavier. Vitesse is 135 flat out and BMW is 142. Chances are that on a spirited thrash down a twisty road the BMW would disappear and if you took the extra 200kg out of its weight it would be quicker everywhere.

If you take the famous on-board of Senna at Monaco in 88 was it, now that car is being Driven. If you see an on-board of Hamilton in his current stead, that car is being Piloted. And that's the difference. They aren't taming these undrivable beasts but now guiding and threading cars that seem very compliant.

In-car footage of the super touring cars always sticks in my mind and not just because of John Cleland's hand gestures. I remember seeing some of Alain Menu, probably in the Renault Laguna, the camera was where the passenger seat would've been and facing towards him. Everything was so calm with just a gentle push forward on the gearlever for braking and the slightest movement of the legs for braking. Obviously it looked liked total mayhem from outside!

I know I say it every time, but bring back H-pattern gearboxes. You can even automate them if you want - after all if you can get it to disenage-clutch-change gear-re-engage clutch just by clicking a paddle, you can do it by moving a lever. Should lengthen brake distances and lap times (iirc the basic fore/aft sequential gear box was worth nearly two seconds a lap back in super-tourer days) and increase the chance of driver error under pressure resulting in more genuine overtakes rather than DRS helplessness. I've heard the excuse 'Oh they've got so many other alterations to make on the steering wheel to do that' and I have the perfect answer: Get rid of it all. Two fuel maps - full whack & conserve, brake balance, maybe an anti-roll bar adjustment and you're good to go.

How would that fit in with the other formulae? There needs to be a progression and F1 is supposed to be the ultimate technical formula. I am yet to see tech go backwards even if it would be better. Root and branch change seems the way forward and not the march to electric either, we have something for that. We have ways to make eco fuels so a layer of electric and a layer of ICE should be realistic.
