Reports just out that Murray Walker has passed away aged 97. A ripe old age of course but still a sad loss for the sport. A lot of my memories of F1 growing up have his excited voice in the background. He really was one of the biggest legends of the sport who wasnt a driver.

Sad to see this. He’s been the voice of Motorsport for me since I was a kid in the 70’s and 80’s. Rest well old chap.

Sad news. I enjoyed the Walker / Hunt commentary back in the day.

I must admit I thought he’d died a few years ago. RIP

Sad news. I enjoyed the Walker / Hunt commentary back in the day. I agree. I have been watching old F1 races recently and the combination of both worked well. Hunt interjected only when he wanted to, and let Murray do the most of the talking. And I think Murray liked that! Murray’s contribution to motorsport and broadcasting probably won’t be matched by a single person again. He set a standard for enthusiasm and knowledge in motorsport like no other. RIP.

A more self-effacing person will never be seen in broadcasting again. An absolute gentleman who never stopped being just another fan and still had that schoolboy look about him when surrounded by cars and bikes.
The RAC threw a dinner for him to talk about his father’s bikes and there were a few placed around the club. He entertained us all with his tales and memories and then thanked US for allowing him to do so. I met him a couple of other occasions too, one a James Hunt tribute dinner, and he was just a motorsport nutcase.
By way of tribute I propose at least one day this week we all have eggs for breakfast. His ad campaign “go to work on an egg” is one of the best known in the history of the industry, even featuring in an episode of Hancock’s Half Hour (the blood donor, reading the ads on the wall).

I read elsewhere on an interweb page that someone suggested that the trophy for winning the British GP should be renamed the Murray Walker Trophy. Seems a good idea

Autocar did a feature around him and the British GP, he refused to pay for sky F1 coverage because he thought it was a ripoff.
