How far would you go on additions to your own car? I'm particularly interested in if people would change the alloys for anything other than original equipment. Modding does seem limited to certain markets these days.

NoN OEM generally looks Pretty bad. Winter wheels is a maybe, but oem wheels would still be the way to go.
The only exception is on a pick up. There are a fair few aftermarket wheels that I think look better than oem.

I'd consider an exhaust change (the Coupe has a Scorpion one because the OEM fit didn't let enough of the 5 pot sound out) and possibly wheels but I think in general the latter only works on older stuff due to the more, er, technical design applied to modern cars.

Exhausts are OK - I've got a non OEM one of the Jag.
For wheels my answer is "it depends". Some cars with certain wheel designs can look better, but as Tim said, these are often older cars and use classic wheel designs. Like Minilite alloys. A lot of modern aftermarket wheels just look like somebody has chavved up their car rather than enhanced it.

You can get away with aftermarket alloys - as long as they are subtle and unbranded.

I love a good set of aftermarket alloys and some cars suit more then others. BMW's always look good with a set of BBS
If I had an M2 for example I'd deffo be tempted to put an aftermarket exhaust, wheels, subtle drop and some carbon bits on it.

I'm firmly in the OEM camp. I've bought several sets of wheels for the winter and I've always gone for a style that was available on that particular model when it was new e.g. the standard M Sport alloys for the 535/750 rather than an SE wheel which is usually what BMW offer in the UK (both sets were from Germany). The only exception is the Golf as you can't get 18" Pretorias on a new car, but it's the official winter wheel for the R, the same style as the 19" summers and looks a lot better than the standard 18" Cadiz wheel.
edit: I did break my non-OEM rule with the aluminium paddles for the Golf and am really happy I did.

You and me both, but I think I'd go with O.Z Ultralegger for old times sake.

My kind of question. I go with whatever I like the look of - in the past I have used none OEM wheels (Speedlines on my Fiesta, BBS on the 405, TSWs on the Escort and Vectra)
I've always liked the idea of making stuff fit, even if it's not designed for the car. My 309 GTi had the backbox from a Mk3 Astra on it, for example, because it looked better than the Peco it already had. I've had a few custom stainless systems made as well.
Wheels can make or break a car - they have to suit the shape of the body and one of the cardinal sins that you don't see so much anymore is newer model wheels on an older car. A Mk3 Fiesta with Focus wheels looks wrong.
The Mazda is going to be a real mixed bag should it all come to fruition - Mazda chassis, Volvo engine, BMW gearbox and whatever else I can throw at it to make it work.

I've always been a OEM-look man myself.
So for example, when I had a Mk2 Golf, I originally upgraded the wheels to a set of Golf Rallye multi-spoke alloys, and then later switched to the lovely three-piece BBS split-rims that were optional on G60s.
On my A3, I had some 17" S3 alloys fitted to it, and when I later got an S3, I sourced some OEM 18" RS4-style alloys for it.
But I think that was the last time I upgraded the alloys on any car I've owned.
I could certainly be tempted to upgrade the alloys on the 440i to BMW's optional dealer-fit 405M style ones, which I think look great on the 4GC, but have never been able to justify £2k on a set of alloys when the current ones are perfectly serviceable. Plus the problem is that they are 20", and I've always been worried about what that might do to the ride quality.

I also think modding is a yoof thing slightly.
For example, when I was a student, I bought myself a Tornado Red J-reg Mk2 Golf 1.8GL which I loved to bits. I went for the GL over the Driver as the GL had the big bumper look which I preferred.
However a GL Golf is not very cool-looking, so I then set about making it look as much like a GTI as possible with the aid of many afternoons spent picking over carcasses in a local scrapyard that specialised in VWs and in those days had no shortage of crashed Mk2 Golfs and Jettas.
Mods were:
- replaced the standard steel wheels with a set of 14" teardrop alloys from the scrap-yard - later replaced with 15" BBS versions; - fitted obligatory GTI twin headlamp front grille with red edging (new); - Front fogs lamps fitted - involved sourcing a pair with the necessary brackets and wiring from scrap-yard, cutting out the blanking pieces in the fog-lamp holes in the lower bumper, fitting them and getting an auto-electrician to wire them up; - deeper new OEM GTI chin-spoiler fitted to bottom of front bumper in place of the thin GL version; - deletion of wing-mounted aerial and replacement with rear roof-mounted bee-sting aerial; - replaced rear light clusters with half-smoked items (from scrap-yard); - replaced entire rear tailgate with one from a late-model Tornado Red GTI from scrap-yard (easier than fitting the black foil and spoiler to the existing tailgate); - fitted full (pattern part) GTI side mouldings (arches, sills and doors); - replaced all black plastic interior door-handles with chrome versions from a US-spec Jetta in the scrap-yard - fitted new pattern GTI twin-exit back-box; - replaced faulty OEM Pierburg carburettor with new Weber one (made a noticeable difference to the performance); - replaced steering wheel with OEM leather-rimmed version; and - replaced gear knob with metal golf ball version.
Probably others I've forgotten!
Was very pleased with the result.

With that history, I'm amazed the 4GC doesn't have M4 wheels at the very least! I'd have never guessed who'd be right behind blarno in the modding list

Almost always OEM for me, what little I would ever do in the way of modification. The winter wheels for my old Benz were OE, but no other modifications made and I never saw the need to make any. Maybe Mercedes actually knew what they were doing and any interventions from me would be pointless and detrimental?
The one time I have gone to town with modification is many years ago with my old Series Land Rovers. Even then, it involved a Rover V8 engine, genuine LR axles and brakes and a factory approved overdrive.
Edit: of course, we have to remember the bonnet star recently added to my new Benz...

Generally OEM eg the Merc winters are the stock 17s for the model in grey (I actually prefer them to the night painted summers)
Porsche has a Turbo Thomas bespoke exhaust, and a couple of OEM upgrades eg leather wrapped grab handles
Lotus has numerous upgrade projects planned, rx8 seats, short shift kit and maybe a trip one day to barnosport to swap the Isuzu motor for a 1.5 ecoboost triple.
My MK2 Golf has OEM door speakers, eibach anti roll bars and springs, golf ball knob. E30 also got OEM leather steering wheel, fog lights, map light mirror
Basically I follow the rule of trying to keep it looking stock with period options retrofitted and I'm a sucker for leather wrapped trim!

Me too.... but I do recall the days when you could go into a scrap yard with your toolbox and remove the bits you wanted yourself. Sad days now that this seems to be no longer possible, in fact just finding a scrap yard that you can go into as a member of the public is next-to-impossible where I live, the nearby places are all trade only :-( As to mods, the sort of cars I buy don't lend themselves to aftermarket anything, and I've been fortunate that I have liked the standard wheels fitted to almost all the cars I have owned.... closest I got was fitting a set of Rover 216 Vanden Plas wheel trims to my Honda on which the 213/216 was based (it had steel wheels with no trim as standard). Totally transformed the look of the car to the extent that it confused more that one Honda dealership.
EDIT: Ah yes and having uploaded and viewed the photo - the speed stripes too....... The ones across the front and rear of the car were very subtle (all my own work too) The Scenic got striped too....

Bess is no longer stock but was not when I bought her. She how has Weber carbs mainly because the originals are no longer made and I could not get a refurb kit. Steering wheel was changed before I bought her, it may have been an OEM option though.

Depends on the car. The Defender is obviously a free for all with accessories, but they have all served a purpose more than once.
I put aftermarket alloys and an exhaust on my Clio.
The Mazda has coilovers and an exhaust - necessary on a sports car, I think.

Thinking back over my cars I've never really changed anything on them. The closest I got tuning was having an Alpina but that's not really the same. I keep looking at ProSpeed stuff for the Discovery but I'm not sure I can bring myself to do it.

I think your shape Disco looks good with a roof rack and ladder with extra lights, but that is about it. I would go with a discreet winch to the standard bumper too and some proper AT tyres.

Do you have a twin in Shrewsbury? There is a Disco 5 I've seen a few times that has roof bars / rack plus A/T tyres. Not sure about the ladder. It does look good.
