The governor of California has banned the sale of new ICE cars by 2035. While I know that things have been heading this direction for a while, it’s the fact that there’s a date for it now that’s a real pain. He’s been a disaster of a governor, (the fires that California is famous for are not due to climate change, they’re due to total mismanagement of forests by multiple governments for example), he’s increasing taxes on everything, shutting down businesses in small cities that are completely unaffected by covid, and now he’s going to be seen as the saviour of the planet for leading the move to EVs. Politicians will praise his move. Others will start to follow and soon our roads will be quiet, boring places with nobody able to drive themselves anymore. I’m interested to see which European country will be first. I’d put money on it being Ireland. No car lobby and too many do gooders to prevent it. There’s also no infrastructure and no financial incentives either but that won’t stop the politicians. Anyway, if I end up staying here long term, I’ll need to decide what new car to buy in 2034 that will keep me smiling while I produce enough carbons to offset the EVs that are all around me. www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-09-23/gavin-newsom-fracking-ban-california-zero-emissions-cars

Presumably even in 2040 you'll still be allowed to buy a 10 year old Mustang?

Presumably even in 2040 you'll still be allowed to buy a 10 year old Mustang? Yes but where will you buy your fuel from? I'm sure that once sales of new ICE engined cars are banned, fuel sales will start to slow and it won't take many years before this makes traditional fuel stations unviable financially. It could be that in the fullness of time, fuel will only be available from supermarkets or in cans bought off the shelf, as when cars first started to exist. The clock has been wound back about 100 years......

I read the other day that environmental groups are lobbying the UK government hard to bring the date for the ban of the sale of ICE cars forward to 2030. Perhaps it is really all part of their plan to stop us travelling at all? Ban sales of ICE cars; then move to make existing ICE cars uneconomic to run by higher and higher taxation; make electric cars expensive through road pricing and taxation; make recharging them hard; keep us all local and able to be controlled. After all, the political left hate the car for its ability to give people freedom and so make them hard to control.

There's always been Cal cars and 49-state cars so I guess this is one step further. Californians were always weird: their houses are either on fire or being shaken to the basement level by earthquakes but they still think they live in utopia.
I'm waiting to see what would happen to a Texas governor that even mentioned banning ICE cars in a passing comment......

With a bit of luck the eco fuels lobby will achieve a breakthrough and make all this moot.

Frankly, I think it's all talk. I'll be very surprised if the ban actually happened. Not least in the States where every Bill gets stuck in argument for ages.

Ha! Once Dictator Trump gets going California will split off from the US and they'll have to build a big wall to keep all the pollution out from a coal-fired USA.

I'd be surprised if there wasn't a movement getting going in the USA to defend the people's right to buy and drive petrol-powered cars, just like there is a movement (or series of protests) for their right not to wear face-masks or have to undergo lock-down measures

Isn't California struggling to keep the lights on at the moment? What are they going to do when there's 5 million cars & trucks trying to recharge as well? We can mock the yanks as much as we want for voting for Trump, but fuck me the Democrats are insane

We can mock the yanks as much as we want for voting for Trump, but fuck me the Democrats are insaneCalifornia Democrats aren't the same as NY democrats, or Chicago ones. As a state CA is a bit of stand out, even compared to HI and AK, due to is huge economy, its massive numerous and dense population (in either sense of the word) covering a HUGE land area compared to the top 10 states by population density (CA is 11th; 1/5th the density of NJ but 20 times the size) and has always been "different" where cars, water and power are concerned because of this factor. Until the Clinton era CA was 100% Republican in POTUS voting and had far longer periods of Republican Governors than Democrats, including under one Ronald Reagan (Rep.) who was governor when the CARB act was introduced that led to CA state cars having more stringent emissions tests. You can only own a 49-state car in CA if certain criteria are fulfilled, like inherited vehicle, divorce settlement, theft of your 1-state car out of state and stuff like that. So they've always been Californians, not Democrats or Republicans. Or as my step-dad described them " a bit weird". Mind you he was adamant that the average age of the population of FL was "deceased"......
