Oh and I'm test-driving cars at the moment because my wife isn't here, which means (a) I have more spare time and (b) I don't need to provide justification for what she would see as time-wasting...

.....I'd probably just do what I did last time, which was, on collection day for the new car, hand the old car over to a specialist to sell on commission You end up formally owning two cars for as long as it takes to sell the old one but you cease needing to tax/insure the old one from the time you hand it over., plus it netted me a clear £3k more than trade in/WSAC in an entirely fuss-free manner. Unless you need to money right away, this way of doing things strikes me as a no-brainer. Quick question: who sold the M135i for you? I'm looking at this as the most likely option for the Gorilla.

Not sure how test driving cars can be seen as time wasting, much more like fact finding imho.

Would there be much of a price difference if you sold it to a dealer on the Continent as opposed to here in the UK?

Aside from the thread hijack, selling to a dealer is not an issue whatever country either way. I’ve just cleaned the wheels and I know what I’ll be asking for it. Let’s see how it goes.

For a car like the Gorilla, I'd be very tempted to take it to Munich Legends. That's what I did with the M5. Dan knows how to charge you for the pleasure but they love a rare-groove Alpina and would probably be as good as anyone at finding you a loaded enthusiast buyer at a decent price. For the M135i, which was a bit too vanilla and cheap to justify ML, I used Jason Barker, who was quite a bit cheaper.

Yeah I was most likely considering ML.

What you actually need is a Toyota GR Yaris

What you actually need is a Toyota GR Yaris That's one of those cars that I suspect might have a removable roll-cage that doubles as an handy zimmer-frame for excitable pensioners who got carried away in the Worthing dealership.

So on holiday in south of France staying with friends. Their mother, our hostess, has a Macan GTS. Being a very generous lady, she insisted I take it out for a spin.
In short it solves everything I felt was wrong with the S version. It’s much snortier and drives extremely well.

Have you had permission to proceed, on the basis that it would be broadly double the cost of your current car?

It was a 2018, so what I’d get if buying used.

Not a great exterior/interior colour combination, it would be a bit better with black upper dash and carpets (and matt leather…) and maybe white should be excused in a warmer country. But I do think a 2018 GTS or Turbo is the sweet spot, just not quite so appealing at today’s inflated prices.

So that's you lost on a configurator for an evening then....
We missed meeting up by a day or two (I note the '83' numberplate for the Var, same as Ma's) as we left on Saturday and are now in Slovakia having driven through the Dolomites and the Tirol, taking a cross country detour to reach Salzburg from the south to avoid Germany (the best route is Innsbruck - Rosenheim (where my step-brother went to school) - Salzburg) but the Schengen website says the Germans want all manner of documents so we didn't chance it.

Ah shame! We are in St Tropez, just above the Pampelone beach. Due to be here until Weds and then stopping off with other friends in Portofino for a few days en route to my in-laws.
I say “due” because today a strong mistral wind has got up and this evening a wildfire has started up somewhere upwind at a guess just the other side of Port Grimaud. Everything already stinks of woodsmoke.
Working on assumption it’s far enough away with water between it and us but this is a promontory and I wouldn’t like to get stuck here!!

I’m unhappy about any fire I can actually see - just taken this from the end of the garden at the back of the house, looking inland:

Oh yes that is nice. Although it doesn’t have air suspension which I’m told is a must. The tarty white one has full PASM and air.

Ah yes. That flashed up on Var Matin website. Looks a bit iffy. My mother was saying they hadn’t seen rain for 60+ days when we arrived then in the middle of our first week there it rained a bit. I was WFH so it mattered not but the girls took the chance to wander up to the castle.
Last summer when we went St Trop the beach we were on closed two days later due to a surge in Covid.

We have been nowhere near the beach for that precise reason - surely one of the world’s most expensive ways to ensure you catch COVID would be to go to one of the beach clubs like 55! They are jam-packed. The joy of this villa is that it has a sizeable garden and huge infinity pool with a spectacular view, so we’ve just hung out here as a private house party with a group of friends, catching up, occasionally grabbing the binos to scope out some squillionaire’s particularly titanic mega-yacht, and then going down into town for strolls and pricey aperitifs!

Slovaks have to go to the beach: something to do with being landlocked I reckon. The port was far worse than the beaches. This year we went to Cannes for a three day break by the sea and the one thing very noticeably absent was the use of English as a first language. I’m also happiest by the pool at my mum’s and generally find the beach and the lake a bit of a chore.

Just read this morning’s Var Matin. Pretty bad overnight on the fire front. Keep safe Racing.

What a fab location, think if my numbers came up its where I'd base myself permanently.
I really don't mind the interior of the Macan but matched with white and black wheels, what were they thinking. Still good that you've found a car you like which tick all the boxes.
