Alonso returning is going to be spectacular. He perhaps isn’t the best qualifier, but he has the race pace of the best of them. Alonso is one of those drivers who can make people watch or attend. When he practiced for the Indianapolis 500, you had thousands more people watch the live feed because Alonso was driving. It was a sole car driving around for hours.
Alonso has been political to maximise his position, it has been detrimental to him. Alonso never expected Hamilton to be that fast in 2007, and he threatened to grass up his team boss to the FIA. But I would still hire him. He performs.
And let’s be honest, Renault is used to big names that get in trouble, another one won’t harm!
I think 2021 and beyond might suit Renault. It will put more emphasis on the cleverest and most resourceful team, not the richest. Renault evidently can't compete in todays arms race, which thankfully will be gradually wound down. When you have people like Pat Symonds, Steve Nielsen and Alonso, you can go places. People have complained about the decision to hire Alonso, saying that Renault should have hired a driver from their young driver programme. Guanyu Zhou is a decent driver, but Renault needs a giant that can go toe-to-toe with Hamilton, Verstappen and Leclerc. When one considers that 2022 will have much better natural racing, you need people who can race, and Alonso is one of the best racers out there.
