We did a 300 mile road trip today. Sadly not in the Jag, but in the Shogun with the trailer on the back. Every road report on radio 2 was one long tale of carnage. Accidents left right and centre, lorries on fire, breakdowns in roadworks. You name it, it was happening. Luckily we heard about the lorry fire and follow on 90 minute delay on the M6 before we were committed. Soo took the M6 Toll to avoid it. Buck fuck me - £10.60 for a 4x4 and trailer. That's criminal.
What's the general view? Are people driving worse after the layoff? I think a lot are. They seem even more in a hurry to get everywhere than they were before.

I’ve been driving most of the way through, a huge amount less than I did before, but still some decent length trips. When it was really quiet it was fantastic, there were a few people going much faster than you’d normally see, but it was quiet enough for it not to cause anyone else an issue. As it’s got busier, people’s behaviour and attitude definitely took a big step backwards. Whether or not that’s worse that it was before, I’m not sure.

You weren't in Cheshire were you? I had the same experience on my 300 mile journey to Liverpool vet school. Plenty of shite driving on display.

I'm another who has been driving (on & off granted) all through this. I suspect there's a combination of things Peter has alluded to, including poor maintenance, overall deterioration in driving standards due to widespread lay-off from driving and, perhaps, a sense of "why should I slow down?" from those who were going much faster than was the norm though I imagine the %age of those will be low).
Add to all that, changes in perception of those of us who have had luxury of relatively empty roads to enjoy - though again, perhaps not a high percentage overall.
As always these days, it's a matter of "Ca' canny, but ca' awa!"

I've had a lot more instances of cars pulling out when they really ought not to on NSL roads. Fortunately I'm not stupid enough to keep my foot planted when theres a junction coming up but those that do could quite easily end up in and accident. The motorways are quieter but the 4 lane sections of the M25 I've used have had more instances on cars sat doing 70 or just under in lane 3 when lanes 1 and 2 are empty for a considerable distance. I'm sure these people were doing it before lockdown but it was perhaps more noticeable with lanes 1 and 2 being so much quieter than usual.

Been driving off-and-on throughout, going into work on occasions... today was one of those. This morning I think I saw a broken down vehicle in every emergency layby on the M3 and M25 that I passed. Driving standards are also poorer, many are ignoring speed limits, overtaking where there is danger, no indicating when turning or changing lanes etc etc. not to mention lane 3 of 4 hogging on the M3

Not just driving but walking too. A busy part of the road to the local shops has a narrow pavement so in line with what I learned as a kid, when I am facing oncoming traffic I am the one that steps into the road when I can see nothing is coming. However, lots of people try to step in the road with traffic behind them and it gets close sometimes. I have lost count of the times I tell people that when traffic is coming from behind, you cannot be sure it is safe so stay on the pavement but frankly they mostly do not listen.

Having been driving as normal for work I noticed early on that standards and behaviour are worse, as is attitude towards other drivers. I think there is a fair bit more of a "fuck you" attitude out there.

I've seen a few stupid overtakes by the types of car not normally in a hurry and generally they haven't been but are seemingly no longer prepared to wait for someone slower in front. One as someone overtaking past a crossroads on the A92 and a few of instances of people doing it where the road (a proper main one) undulates with dips big enough to hide a car.

I saw two cars do a real dodgy overtake on the A281 through Bramley heading towards Guildford this morning. They both overtook a dawdler whilst approaching a blind corner because they were getting fed up being stuck doing 35 in a 30 zone. They were both damn lucky the truck coming the other way hadn't started his journey 5 seconds earlier. It was one of those moments (especially when the second one followed the first onto the opposite side of the road) that I actually winced. I've never seen anyone do that there although most cars do speed along at at least 40mph.
