I know there are plenty of tech experts here, so I wanted a bit of tv advice. Current set is circa 10 years old. It’s an LG, it’s 50 inches and i seem to recall it cost a lot. Anyhow, under much pressure I’m being forced to look for a new one. It’s started blinking off about every 20 minutes for maybe half a second). I can live with it, no one else can. It’s the only tv in the house and is connected to an Apple TV box which has other apps on it too like Netflix.
i don’t want to go much bigger. Lounge is about 35 ft x 20 ft and the current tv feels about the right size. The bevel is pretty broad so perhaps I can go up one size without it growing much in external dimensions. I have no specific needs apart from it being reasonably future proof. Happy to pay a bit more for something that will last longer. Where do I start?

Don't get a Samsung. They bombard the UI with adverts you can't opt out of.

I've discussed this before. There are targeted adverts that appear in the source selection menu. You can't turn them off and as I've paid fuck knows how much for my TV, I should be able to. Its well known after a quick Google. It may depend on the age of the TV.

Ours is 18 months. I think there's a tiny ad in the bottom left if you scroll through the Smart Menu. Quite hard to spot.

Mine keeps flashing messages with terms they think I should accept in a banner across the top of the screen. I find the advertising app on the bottom left more than an irritation and it makes me wonder what data my TV is collecting.

We have an LG and a Panasonic. I'd buy Panny all day long mainly because I'm used to their UI on the programme and BluRay recorder. I find the LG UI really annoying and the magic wand thing is a PITA sometimes.
Regardless of what others will tell you don't spend more than £600 as it's just a glass screen and a circuit board in a bit of ABS plastic. Just buy a new one in two years time if it shits up but it won't and in 5 years time it'll still be doing fine. TVs are just disposable items but at about 6 months old T5 knocked the LG for six and bent the input connector to fuck. £10 for a whole new PCB, five minutes with a screwdriver, two minutes to reassign the remotes and the TV was back to new.
My only advice is buy a 4k TV at the price point I suggested then get an 8k in 2-3 years time. Not much in 8k now but there will be.

I’m really happy with my LG. It was a bit more than BBS suggested budget, but having had a good look at various options on JL and Richer Sounds, it was well worth the extra imo.
You’re right to think that you may be able to get a larger size screen without it being much bigger overall. Ours is a 65” and only looked really big in the living room for the first day. It helps that it slightly narrower than the unit it sits on.

One thing I like about my Samsung is the ability to cast things from Youtube on my android phone onto the screen, can you still do that with Panasonic, LG etc?
It is good watching Harry's garage on the big screen

Cool - the other thing I like is I have the Samsung remote on my phone - great for changing the volume when Mrs M thinks she is in control

Ok. That’s was easy, I’ve ordered that model (c9 55). For the non-interested it’s a very confusing market with oled and qled and a whole heap of other acronyms and marketing noise. I’ve measured the current tv, and although having a screen size that’s 5 inches bigger, the new one is ever so slightly physically smaller. Should keep the family happy. Thanks for the help.

I’m more interested in the fact you’ve got a “lounge”of 35ft x 20ft, I think that’s more commonly referred to as a ballroom. Think the Odeon could turn up with one of their screens and it’d be lost

🤣 Mine isn't quite as large as that at about 28x14, but due to windows and sockets, the largest I can fit without completely rearranging the room is 48" which is plenty.

Good choice Garry, I know you’ll be really pleased with it.
Depends on the layout of the room and the TV / furniture placement, but going for a larger screen (not quite Odeon size!) would have been fine. Our living room is pretty much the same size as Marks and the 65” looks fine.

Another happy LG OLED owner here. Good choice. Pity it couldn't wait a while longer as the 2020 model is only £1599 and has only just been released, so it'll probably be much cheaper than the C9 in a few months.

We've got a Panasonic 4k but it's only 40" and the more I watch it from the other side of the lounge the more I feel the need for something bigger (at least 49") but its just a case of convincing the wife. She's not got a problem with how I spend my money, she just doesn't like the living room to feel as if the TV is dominating it.

My 12 year old 46" Panasonic plasma is soldiering on with a decent picture. Weighs a ton so unlikely to be nicked.

My 42" is a bit big for a 9' wall but not going to change it until I have to. Only 8 years old so it should do for a while.

My 12 year old 46" Panasonic plasma is soldiering on with a decent picture. Weighs a ton so unlikely to be nicked. We have an 8yr old 42" Panasonic Viera plasma in our sitting room, which has a generally excellent picture for normal HD but absolutely cannot cope with eg the latest Attenborough films - presumably those shot in 4k or some such - the movement of eg flocks of birds is blurred and jerky. Plus as an early smart TV, it's a bit old tech, and the sound has always been pretty crap. So we're planning to retire it to our bedroom where it would replace an ancient 32" Sony Bravia which is not a smart TV and get a new 48/50" TV for the sitting room. It can't be bigger than that because the space for the TV in the built-in shelving won't take a TV bigger than 50", plus since our sitting room isn't large (about 11ft x 17ft), we only sit about 8ft from the screen, so no need for the screen to be bigger than that anyway. So thinking of this: www.richersounds.com/tv-projectors/all-tvs/sony-bravia-kd49xh9505bu.htmlWe contemplated an OLED, but just couldn't quite justify £1,500 on a TV. Are they really that much better than a top-end LED?

If you could get a 55inch in , then I’d defo go OLED as you can get one for £1000, but the 48 inch oled is £1500 so the one you’ve suggested should be good for the money It’s when you see an oled v led next to eachother when you’re in somewhere like Richer sounds or John Lewis with a dark scene in a movie clip that it really shows the difference .
