ULEZ

I've been on Autotrader a lot recently having a casual browse through a variety of types buy while looking at Nissan 370Zs this morning it's finally occurred to me that my understanding of ULEZ might not be correct.
I thought it meant you would be able to drive a car described this way into low emission zones but somehow I don't think a 3.7 litre petrol engine that's been apparently relatively unchanged for at least 11 years would qualify.
So what does ULEZ actually mean?

In Glasgow, the ULEZ they are introducing allows diesels which are Euro 6 or better and petrol cars which are Euro 4 and built after something like 1998.

Makes sense I suppose. I wasn't thinking in terms of legislatively applied distinctions, rather just common sense. How silly of me!! Next challenge will be to find a recent car that doesn't qualify

Broadly speaking, most petrol cars built after 2006 are Euro IV, and most diesel cars built after 2016 are Euro VI.
But engines in some earlier cars, particularly German ones, were already built to those standards.

I thought ULEZ meant restricting to only those vehicles that could be driven electrically.

I remember in the handbook my 2005 Lexus IS250 was listed as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle by the State of California. I didn't take it there to test this out though.

I thought ULEZ meant restricting to only those vehicles that could be driven electrically. Nope. As someone who will live in a ULEZ zone from next year, you can be sure I know the rules.

See this is what I don't understand as my daughters 2003 K11 is OK for the ULEZ (according to the website), but I'm sure it shouldn't be.

We are compliant too, even with a 3 litre, apparently fume belching diesel and a 4.4 litre monster! My father in law has a 2015 C Class 220D and he isn't too happy to find it is only Euro V.

That is one potential issue that needs to be looked at. A 5 year old C class doesn't look or feel particularly old, yet the new rules could make it absolutely junk as far as the used car markets of many cities will be concerned. Good for buyers who don't live in ULEZ areas but not so good if you own one and live inside the boundaries of the north and south circular.

I reckon at least 50% of cars in my area will need replacing by October next year. Mercifully both of our cars are Euro VI petrols, so absolutely fine for the time being.
