You might remember that I'm a keen triathlete and so pretty used to cycling. Last year my wife bought an electric bike which i thought was a bit of a gimmick, but I've become a convert! Its brilliant for local trips and puts a smile on my face very time. I like catching roadies on trick aero bikes, but the biggest thrill is on off-road tracks where its like being on a rollercoaster. Exercise-wise I'd estimate it's about half the effort of pedal power alone. Anyone else tried one?

They look like a gimmick on first glance but might be useful, not for me on price alone but I am a bit out of touch on the price of a lot of things tbh. I suspect they would be safer than those bloody horrible electric skateboards etc that people are riding on the road and being killed on.

I think the pedalling charges the battery/powers the motor too?

She’s got a Ribble AL e. Range is about 60 miles, but you can get an additional battery that sits in the bottle cage and that will get you 100 miles in total. I don’t think there’s any recharging through pedalling (not sure though), but if the battery goes flat you’re down to peddle power alone - it weighs 13.5 kg which is ok. I’d guess the battery and motor are 3 kg. Assistance stops once you pass 15 mph, but that’s enough speed for a commute. It cost about £1800, so not cheap. If I had a daily commute of less than 15 miles I think I’d choose an ebike.

There is a guy passes the office most days on a e-bike and I am amazed at the speed he goes. When the traffic is doing about 30mph he is pretty well keeping up. Do they all cut off at 15mph or do some keep powering on demand? This guy is as fast as some of the serious lycra brigade who are giving it everything.
The husband of our next door neighbours is very much into electric but not pedal bikes. He has a BMW electric scooter which he uses to go to work most days and he also has an electric skateboard which he uses to go to work in the summer or just out for some fun. He loves them.

Not seen you here for a while, Garry. Only good enough for you when you're isolated and bored, eh?!
(Only joking - hope life's treating you well.)

I know a couple of keen cyclists who were offered a go on them on holiday and are completely sold on them now. They've each purchased one now to complement their road bikes. One got one for his wife as well so she could keep up with him.

As I generally don't like cycling, a e-bike sounds like a good idea.
Some friends have them and they love them. But they do say you have to pedal faster than on a standard bike. Which I guess must be something to do with the gearing? - do they still have gears or are they mono-geared?
Gary - welcome back!!

It looks a bit old fashioned. There are nicer ones out there. Mind you all it’s lacking is the ejector seat.

Almost half price. No doubt they removed the ejector seat to cut the cost.

There is a limit that keeps them to 15mph, but this can be hacked. In the states the limit is 25mph i think. Even with the 15mph limit you need to be a pretty good cyclist to stay in touch with an e bike. They pick up speed easily.

Friend of ours picked up a commuter PAYG bike at Waterloo and said she was amazed at how fast she was going on her journey to St Paul's, overtaking all kinds of lycra-clad speed merchants. Then a colleague pointed out she was on an e-bike.....
She's super intelligent in her field but totally dippy in all other aspects.
E bikes look to be a good solution to urban transport.

A colleague with bad knees bought an eBike last year and has been out on it several times a week where she wouldnt've even bothered buying a bike before.

If someone smart invented something like a solar panelled sombrero you could recharge the bike as you travelled along.

I like the Orbea M20. Shame it's Spanish... I think Orbea and ribble share the same motor? And Ribble are based in sunny Preston!
