The XFR insurance is up in mid April - I won't be renewing it as things stand. The 1 series cab has already been uninsured for a couple of months and that will continue now (or more likely have the Q3's policy switched to it shortly). Anyone else laying off the fleet temporarily? What is the modern stance on how long cars should be OK? I was going to take the XFR out for one decent drive (in the dry) and fill the tank up first, then I'm assuming a couple of months of non-winter weather should be fine. I have a battery conditioner/charger that has been filling the BMW's battery for the last few days, that can be used every month or so for a few days. I guess otherwise its a case of not leaving the handbrake on, and giving the brakes a good workout when it does come out of rest. The BMW I started on the drive this weekend and idled for 15 mins while using all the switches, putting the windows and hood up and down, and so on to keep it all working... It's amazing how sticky things like the windows get after a few weeks just sitting there clean.

I'm planning on taking the cars out for a run at some point this week - to Sainsbury's obviously, making sure the oil gets warm enough. I might find a stretch with no camera on it in Ewell.....
Hadn't thought about mothballing: the MoT and Tax on the Gorilla is due in a month so it's a possibility but not for any more than a month I hope!

Horsebox and TVR (both of which were for sale) have been SORNed. I haven't had the V5 for the 110 yet. Will need to sort that if it doesn't come soon.

Isn't cancelling the insurance taking a bit of a risk? If it gets stolen you're in for a hell of a fiscal beating and if you have not got third party insurance and somebody got injured they'd not be covered either.
I enquired some years ago about the saving if you convert a fully comp policy to be third party, fire and theft only, explaining that the car would be off the road and SORN'd. The premium was higher. Go figure that one.
I might cancel the tax on the XFR as it has not been used since the middle of February. Every couple of weeks I put it on a battery charger, plus I move it about in the yard to turn the tyres, leave it idling to warm up the oil and play with the switches etc.

SORN'd the Kuga last night from today when the VED renewal was due. It's parked up in my locked garage so I can move it onto the driveway every so often to exercise the engine. Will be using the Fiesta for the foreseeable future for shopping and the very occasional journey to work when necessary

I'm using my car every day and I've just renewed the tax (£466 ). Insurance is up for renewal mid April but I'll just let that auto renew. I suppose I could SORN the Qashqai but for £12 a month I don't know if I can be arsed.

I hadn't even thought about it, but as cancelling insurance isn't an option, it's not something I'm going to do / is worth even though both are on the over £40k rate.
I'll alternate use when I need to go out, but I've never had an issue leaving cars parked up for 2-3 weeks when on holiday so I can't see there being a problem. I'm thinking about seeing the kids in a week or so, we'll all have been in isolation for 3 weeks and I won't do anything other than collect them and bring them to our house for a week. It's on the list of things you're allowed to do, their mum has been pushing for it since day 1, but I've resisted....as difficult as that has been because it will mean I've not seen them for more than 4 weeks. That will give both cars some decent exercise.

It's only about £12 for the Kuga but it takes seconds to do. Only downside is that should an emergency arise, you can't re-tax for 5 days after declaring SORN. But after that, re-taxing on line also only takes a few seconds so long as you have the V5 to hand.
£12 is £12 (or a large multi pack of toilet rolls if you can find them)

I'm buff enough anyway.

We're saving a lot by being stuck in the house, £250-300 a month on fuel for a start, then there's meals out etc etc.

I just can't see the point. My gym has suspended Direct Debits so I'm better off from that and hardly spending any money - it does really show that buying a coffee a couple of times a day in a coffee shop adds up!

I budget for £100 p.w. for going out - can't be arsed with a few quid here and there. Taking the car out at least weekly for a punt - why not? Roads are nice and quiet.

I've just renewed the Micra's road tax, for £12.65 a month it's not worth cancelling and I intend to use a different car (out of the 3 that are actually taxed) for each journey just to keep them exercised.

My company car hasn't moved since last monday. Don't suppose I'll get any of the benefit in kind tax back at the end of this!

I suppose I should look at my documentation but doesn't your finance agreement/PCP etc say that you have to keep the car insured during the period of the agreement. Or am I just mis-remembering that from somewhere else?

Pretty sure the PCP requires the car to be comprehensively insured. There have been cases of people being caught out by this when involved in an accident. Am getting close to the point where the Kuga becomes mine though ;-)

I'm not sure I'd be happy letting the insurance lapse on a car even if I'm not using it. I know the risk will be small, but a trickle charger introduces a fire risk that Id rather be insured against.

Herself's car is back in the garage again this week, so we're down to using just mine for all trips just now. Her horse has had to be left out in the field 24/7 or kept in 24/7 to minimise Covidity, so she's now feeding the bugger from what she packs into my car's boot every morning! Bloody thing smell like a mobile hay bale just now!!

No, they have to be insured if they are taxed.

My car is still in daily use for work. Insurance due at end of this month, meaning I have to go through that rigmarole. Oh joy.
My dad is going to SORN their Superb. It'll be garaged. He was going to cancel the insurance but I said not to unless he can afford 25k+ to replace it if something happens. They will keep the Citigo available in case of need.

I am using mine every day to go to an empty office, man the phones (I have been an unpaid helpline for the past 10 days!) and deal with IT issues for the staff who are logging in remotely. It's amazing how many more mpg you get when the traffic is light.

It's amazing how many more mpg you get when the traffic is light. John, our phone system has allowed us to have all calls routed to an office mobile as well as ringing in the actual office so our receptionist (who doubles as an admin clerk, teaboy, shopper for bacon rolls, etc) can answer the phone wherever they are. Currently they're sitting at home and answering all incoming calls and then forwarding them to our office extensions, all of which are forwarded to home or mobile phones. Is that something you could do to ease your own burden?

Is that something you could do to ease your own burden? I could get the calls re-routed to any other number but whoever received the calls would then need to transfer them to the correct person - since we don't have office mobiles it would mean someone would need to use their own phone and let's just say there was a bit of resistance to that (so they are now furloughed)

I think all of our staff have been happy enough to do it, there was 1 who was resistant to using their own phone but since that was ancient it was no good anyway and they've got their boss' work phone home.
At least if they're furloughed you don't have to worry about them!!

No, no point.
As a 2016 car, the tax on the BMW is only £17.50 per month. Can't get excited about that given as Michael says, I'm saving on gym membership, commuting costs, office lunches, meals out etc, shopping (other than food).
The Fiat we are still using for the supermarket run and any other essential errands. I will use the BMW now and again just to stretch its legs.

Took the Ioniq out to the shops this morning (only a 5 minutes drive each way). It hasn't moved since last Wednesday and didn't feel particularly happy at first. The brakes were certainly a bit creaky at first but once the surface layer of corrosion had been wiped from the discs they were fine. Oddly the hybrid battery was showing full charge but the car refused to use it and ran off the engine all the way.
