It would be highly unfair to make that retrospective. If they did, I could see myself hanging onto the GC for quite some time - at the time I changed my car six months earlier than originally planned precisely to avoid the new tax charges as I worked out they would cost me a good £2000 more in tax over four years to buy the car after April 2017 compared to buying it before April 2017.

I can't see that happening retrospectively - nearly £1300 a year for a Jag ePace when someone might just be starting a 4 year lease and lots of other horror stories for plenty of the more common cars. This could only be introduced and accepted if it was from a specific future date.

When Gordon Brown brought in the new CO2 based VED bands he did that retrospectively. There was then a huge outcry and already registered cars in the top band were moved down a band. I remember as I had my 3.0 X Type at the time and the VED was going to go up to £500 or some such, but then was locked into the next down band that was about £250. So I would not bet against at least some retrospective increases if it was just left to the Treasury boffins. Hopefully political sense will prevail instead.

"Political sense" is an oxymoron

New Chancellor has to find £350 billion to keep the lights on during the shut down.
Pissing about with VED is the equivalent of arranging a stray pube on a bog seat in a toilet that's situated near to the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Since we aren't going to be going anywhere very far away for the foreseeable future, on Sunday I tucked the BMW back under its cover in the rear driveway for the first time since October (when my wife started using it regularly to go to Newbury). Currently, I am due to need to extract it next Weds to go to BMW Battersea for its seasonal wheel change but that's assuming we haven't been locked down by then (which currently seems a fairly strong probability).
Also need to go to Newbury to pick stuff up, which I would have done today (being by nature a great believer in never tempting fate) but my wife firmly believes she'll still be allowed to go next Monday so is refusing to go any earlier.
Semi-tempting to SORN the BMW if we go on lockdown, since there isn't anywhere we can't just as easily, and more economically and anonymously go in the Fiat (a white Fiat 500 being the automotive equivalent of sparrow in central London - flocks of the things). But better not for the sake of £16/month or whatever it is.

^ SORN it from 1 or 2 days before the end of March (it's monthly rebate anyway) and you can re-tax it instantly on line if you need to use it in April

The Micra is due for renewal at the end of March and I was having a similar discussion with Mrs tim. Do we tax the Micra at £148 per year and cancel the BM (presumably more expensive) or stick with the BM in the knowledge that it can transport significantly more bogroll than the Micra ?

Just checked the DVLA direct debit for the BMW - £17.50 per month. Almost not worth it.
Looking increasingly like a lock-down for London as soon as tomorrow, so let's see what timing is put on that.
