Got a call from my bank today asking about unusual spending on my account. I checked my account and yes, there had been 2 purchases made on my debit card, in a diy store this morning with a third stopped. Grand total of $90 give or take. Card was frozen, I called into the bank to verify this and will get the money back. The last place I used it was at the filling station I always go to...
In other news, my credit here is finally good enough to get a decent credit card, which arrived today, so not too bad at all. I’ll now get air miles for everything I spend, and they’ll boost my balance nicely over the coming months.
My new boss- a car nut- drives a Corvette that’s probably only 3-4 years old and restores classic Porsche’s, told me about a friend of his who had his card scammed by some idiot who tried to buy a $90,000 Land Rover. The guy was caught in the act...

The bit that annoys me about the scammers is that the Police have absolutely no interest in pursuing them. I am sure that if your local petrol station was the source of the problem, the card companies could easily tell if there was a pattern of use at that station followed by fraudulent transactions and that should be enough for the Polioce to investigate. Perhaps it is different in the States.

Yes, I've had my card cloned at a petrol station too. Someone tried to buy £1,000 worth of ASDA home delivery. 🙄

Our MD's card got cloned at an Indian Takeaway in Glasgow. He knew exactly where it had happened but the Police weren't interested. His card was used to buy airplane tickets to the Far East.

And the longer you let this stuff slide the worse it will become. Along with car crime and burglary this stuff doesn't seem to be taken seriously as there is a level of insurance to cover.
For this sort of crime we should just go back to the public stocks and pillory.

For this sort of crime we should just go back to the public stocks and pillory. It's the broken window syndrome. Once you let the small stuff slide then more and more unacceptable behaviour becomes accepted.

It’s only happened to me once, which was also at a petrol station in the US. They spent $2 in KFC, fairly quickly followed by nearly $1,000 in Best Buy, so it got picked up by the credit card fraud team.

I've had one that wasn't picked up by the fraud team. There was a single transaction for about £140 at a boat chandlery. Barclaycard said they would investigate and get back to me. I had a letter a couple of weeks later stating that they had cancelled it from my account. Presumably they had asked the retailer where they had sent the goods that I hadn't bought.

Mrs Tim had a few payments go through her account for an Asda somewhere in the Midlands, I think the total was about £220 and as she clearly has too much money she failed to notice it until a couple of months later (perhaps one of the concerns with no longer getting a paper bank statement). RBS were alerted and having said it might take quite a while to review refunded her within 12 hours. They were able to tell her that the transaction had been made by an iPad and presumably had an IP address as they didn't question her whereabouts when the transactions had been placed at all.
Presumably though the perpetrator has not been reported as there appears little appetite to pursue it.

Herself had three fraudulent Just Eat transactions on her card over the weekend. To their credit Barclaycard spotted that something was wrong straight away and cancelled the card. Haven't worked out yet where the card was cloned.

Perfect thread to tell my debit card fraud story of the week.
Looked at my bank balance widget on Wednesday and it was a bit light Checked the transactions: two with the same clothes suppler within an hour. Cancelled them. New card issued. Job done.
Then I spoke to W2.0........
It turns out she’d bought stuff, checked out automatically and that was it. Trouble is the last thing she bought from that supplier was a gift from me to her so I had paid for it. Cue one sheepish call to Santa’s bank.

Haven't worked out yet where the card was cloned. My son had a load of them with Just Eat a couple of weeks ago. Never used them and never will!

I had some with Just Eat about 6 years ago. It was the bank that phoned me to alert me and they refunded me and replaced the card.
