So, off the hook as judged solely by his own party it seems.
Disappointed, but entirely unsurprised.

Nailed on for re-election. The Democrats can't unite around a credible candidate or articulate any inspiring policies. I reckon Ivanka will stand in 2024 and at the moment she's looking like the first female President of the US.

I reckon Ivanka will stand in 2024 and at the moment she's looking like the first female President of the US. Shuddersome thought. Probably right re Donald's re-election. The weird thing these days, is that American voters at least, seem to care more about random ideological issues relating to identity politics and religious dogma than they do about their own economic best interests. You have fundamentalist Christians voting en masse for a cynical twice-divorced adulterer with no discernable interest in the Christian faith beyond its ability to pull in the votes. They vote for an actively terrible president because he says the right things about abortion, gays, gun control, immigrants and generally bashing foreigners etc, despite the fact he doesn't actually do anything to improve the daily lives of his voters (rather the opposite - he passes laws to make himself and other billionaires richer). Whereas candidates like Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren proposes economic policies aimed at improving the daily lives of average Americans, but end up as lost causes because such left-wing types just can't resist going on crusades about abortion, gays, gun control, and immigrants and what-have-you. So what the Democrats need really (and seem to lack) is a candidate who promises manna from heaven in economic terms but who is capable of plotting a middle path on the explosive social issues and thus not automatically alienating the bible-bashers.

I think if I was American at the moment (but knowing what I do) I'd be embarassed.
He's clearly guilty of something but his own party (insofar as that's the case with US politics) publicly refused to call any witnesses and so there was very little to be discussed.
The only hope now is that the likes of John Bolton (not a man shy of seeking the spotlight) publish their books that effectively contain the evidence of Trump's misdeeds and some of the Trump voters decide he's just too unclean to vote for.
Racing's point about the fundamental Christian brigade is one that's confused me, about US politics, for years. I always assumed christians were taught to be nice to others but apparently that only applies if the 'others' are the same as you, i.e. white, middle class, born & bred types.
It's funny that a country primarily populated by descendants of immigrants doesn't like foreigners, especially those who want to come to visit for more than a holiday.

As was pointed out to me when I made this point to a number of Americans; their ancestors came to the US legally and often applied correctly and waited their turn. They have no truck with people jumping the queue and as us British are so fastidious about queuing etiquette we, of all people, should appreciate that.

US culture and history is one of allegiance to the flag. If you want to live there and you get in legally, follow their rules and established way of life and show allegiance to the flag, then I think that the US still welcomes people. To the extent that they no longer consider themself to be a native of their birth place but "American". It is what unites their country in many ways. And if you choose to live there without getting citizenship but on a Green Card, you are what they consider a "resident alien" - as you are allowed in but most certainly not American. And they will throw you straight out if you break the law. I think this becoming an American is far more the case than in Europe, where many immigrant communities still consider themself to be "X" or "y" rather than German, or British, or French. My ex US finance boss, who was born in Peru for example but has been in the US since college ad has held a US passport for 20 years, used to get very upset if people ever referred to him as Peruvian. In his mind he was American first and foremost.

And re the OP. This result was entirely predictable and the Democrats have basically wasted 6 months pissing about when they should have been attacking Trumps' policies and promoting their own if they want to get a Democrat elected president in 2020. The Democrats seem unable to play the ball - they just want to play the man. And as everyone would tell them, if only they would listen, negative campaigning does not work.

The Democrats are falling into the same traps as the Peoples Vote campaign did. They're spending too much time trying to prove why they think people voted the wrong way without their own plan for a way forward. In the meantime the average American is feeling richer and they have a president who is seen to be championing their interests. The result of this is the presidential campaign will be even more polarised than the last one with a likely us and them narrative from Trump.

He’s just been acquitted of a crime that it’s widely acknowledged he committed because the GOP has completely abandoned any pretence at having any morals.

Exactly, she is supposed to be an experienced politician with lots of respect among her peers and despite Trumps past history fell hook line and sinker. Talk about taking the low road, how much credibility now?

Widely believed and personal opinion are NOT evidence and the process is supposed to be legal. The Ukranians went out and backed his statements so as a lawyer, do you think law is supposed to be about opinion and beliefs not backed up by credible and factual evidence?

Informed legal opinion is in no doubt whatsoever. And after being accused, he went on national TV and repeated his offence.

What else could it be? Part of the nub of this is his inviting/trying to crowbar a foreign power into investigating an opponent. He then does the same thing on national telly. Short of a signed confession, what more do you want?
What amazes me is that the more contempt he shows for the rule of law, the more he lies whilst accusing others of propagating 'false news', the more he gets away with. As someone says above, it must be an embarrassing time to be an American with more than half a brain.

All I am talking about is the number of people who say they "KNOW" he did it while the Ukranian president and team say it did not happen. A lot of those who talk loudest have a vested interest in seeing him go regardless some because he fired them. I think he is pretty poor as a business person let alone president but the septics cannot get their act together to remove him. He probably has his second term in the bag now.

There is a massive amount of testimony including from inside people who've whistleblown*, the Wikipedia page does a fair job of summarising it as I understand it if you want a reasonably precise summary. But his own party let him off, and it was always going to be the case. No matter how well or badly the democrats did what they did, the outcome, which is risible and unjust, was always going to happen.
* As well as publicly committing the offence again, the second time asking China to investigate Biden, he also said publicly that they were trying to find out who the whistleblowers were. This is no permitted.
The guy's a bad joke, as is this aspect of US governance.
