They are huge indeed, my cousin has a Q7. Just clocked that I wrote SQ8, not SQ7. Luckily no one seems to have noticed! I noticed it but as there are so many different Audis and so many different variants (and I'm not an Audi fan), thought nothing of it as it looked like a genuine model designation

There is a Q8 though so I presume there'll be an SQ8 at some point too?

Oh on the engine noise front, my old V10 M5 takes some beating.
That was simply epic - howling up to a ripping scream to make an Irish banshee proud. I can still identify one by noise alone.
But I was watching an episode of The Grand Tour last night where the trio take some old cheap Italian classics on a tour of Scotland, and Clarkson turned up with a fairly minty-looking Alfa Romeo GTV6 that made a simply gorgeous noise.
He kept wibbling about how it was the best-sounding engine ever made and I must say it did sound deeply lovely - like a V6 engine but played by a symphony orchestra with all the rougher notes smoothed away to leave a rich melodic sound that makes most other six-cylinder engines sound positively agricultural.
I do remember that the 3.2 version in my GTA sounded very good - a bit muted inside but an absolute treat for onlookers - that same impossibly creamy burble.

I think the big problem these days is that induction noise is virtually gone with turbos and single butterfly fuel injection. A Lamborghini/ Ferrari V12 on a sextet of downdrought Webbers, an aston V8 on a quartet of the same or a big block Ford/Chevy V8 on mechanically injected throttle bodies takes most, if not all exhaust notes, pulls their pants down and spanks them silly.

He traded his A8 with the 4 litre diesel for it and loves the commanding driving position. He's not so sure about the size of it on country roads though.
He should adopt the approach of females who drive these - don't go anywhere near the verge and if the pleb coming the other way doesn't immediately move over then just stop and let them work it out. You can't risk getting mud on your faux 4x4 after all
Surely no-one can accuse the Q7 of being a faux 4x4? A few years ago I had one for a week when my car was in the bodyshop and I didn't think it was that big or unwieldy and the other peasants on the road just had to put up with it.

Really enjoyed the video Simon. Thanks. Having stood at the side of many rally stages I just love the creamy 5 cylinder sound.

What do you reckon have been the best sounding cars?
This one comes right at the top of my list:

Doesn't sound at all bad, does it?
The V10 in the Gallardo Superleggera for me, I think.

I always loved the sound of the quattro and it was one of the things that encouraged me to buy a Fiat Coupe (and then get a louder exhaust for it).
More quattroism

Of cars that I have personally experienced:
1. My old V10 M5 with the Tubi exhaust took some beating; and
2. The Maserati GranCabrio Sport that I drove in Italy in September sounded absolutely epic - by common accord, it out-sang the three Ferraris and two RS Porsches present.
I've also been in a Lamborghini Aventador driven in anger and that sounded pretty good as I recall but I rather think the above two edge it.
Closer to Planet Earth, the current Audi RS3 sounds indecently good.

What about one of these? Yup i'll agree with that. All the neighbours at the old house used to tell me they heard me every morning. The new neighbours (who are a good bit further away that any of the old neighbours) told me yesterday that I waken them every morning! It brings a smile to my face every day.

I think I posted a vid on here once of some tooned up VR6 TT that sounded epic. Did we do this discussion before? It might be in that thread... I remember that TT and it did sound epic. I was just having a moment this morning when I started this thread thinking about the day when all cars will be silent apart from tyre noise. Hopefully by that time I'll only be interested in being put in one with my zimmer frame and telling it where to go. F*ck off car, just f*ck off!

Merged the two threads for ease.
