For me it has to be the Tesla 3 - a car that competes successfully against the big German 3 and has shaken them out of their conservatism over electric vehicles.
But the Peugeot 208 will win it.

Er, Taycan maybe or the model 3 but I still feel there hasn't been the game changer in that market that makes an Electric car a real everyday prospect.
Maybe the Corolla, its a hell of an improvement on the old one.

The Taycan shouldn't get it ahead of the Tesla due to the relative financial accessability - it's not a gamechanger at £100k+.
It's a dull list otherwise as I think the Corolla is the best of them!

I think the Tesla 3 is an ugly looking thing from the back and rear quarters whereas the Corolla is by far the best looking car in its class so I'd give it to the Toyota.

What a miserable list though, were there really no "interesting" new cars launched this year?

Evidently not, although the Supra was nominated in the long list. www.caroftheyear.org/winners/2020/candidates.phpLast year was moderately interesting, with the Jaguar I-Pace beating the Alpine only by tie-breaker (both were tied on points).

Well, I'd rate the Supra over the Model 3 and Corolla for sure !

All interesting, surely?

Supra is supra disappointing therefore it can't win and can really only come second fiddle to the Z4.

Honestly I don't see why the Taycan shouldn't win. Yes it's expensive but to my mind it is groundbreaking in quite many ways. It's a first full performance EV from a proper sports car manufacturer (not some Silicon Valley startup), plus if its fast charging capabilities takes off it could really change the EV game dramatically.

Another who thinks this is a miserable list.
BMW - I could imagine this winning in recognition of BMW finally caving in the Euro market's preconceptions of what a small hatchback must be. It's a consummate Euro-hatch by all accounts and a reasonably good one. Provided you hadn't bought the previous model for any other reason than the badge on the bonnet.
Ford Puma - I'd need to google this and can't be bothered. It's some sort of eye-glazing TRoc-type thing so cannot see why it should be ECOTY.
Pug 208 - could easily win. It's the sort of car that does and it is at least quite appealing. Even if the rear door handle treatment is every sort of wrong.
Taycan - could win for innovation but I'd guess insufficiently everyman.
Clio - why?
Tesla - I'd deny it the win for that insane lack of a hatchback.
Corolla - see Puma.

As far as I know it's not innovative and it's come from a longstanding sportscar manufacturer. If anything out of those 2 the Tesla should win because it's not only cheaper - and thus likely to be the thing that expands the electric network - but exactly because it comes from someone who is such a newly minted car firm. Additionally Tesla appear to be leading the way in fast-charging.

I can imagine the 208 getting it on account of the availability of engines: petrol, diesel and electric.

Every Model 3 I've seen has been white. If it's available in other colours they must be bloody expensive.

Well at least, after looking at the long list, we can be glad that the X6 and X7 didn't make the cut.
The Pug will probably get it as it is the best all rounder there and as Michael said, available with all odes of propulsion.
I can't see the Tesla getting it, although it probably should, as it is not from a mainstream manufacturer and Tesla don't pander to the press corps. Therefore the journalists will not want to bite the hand that feeds them - i.e the mainstream manufacturers.

Taycan or Tesla Model 3 would get my vote. Both move the game on in different ways, although not necessarily in a direction that appeals to me. However, I was definitely impressed with the Model 3 when I sat in it, and it appears to live up to its performance claims.

We’ve already had this discussion on another thread so won’t go into it here in detail, but to me and thats all that maters, it’s so disappointing. I enquired about the car with my dealer when the concept was launched way back when. If it looked like the concept and was a proper Toyota I’d have bought one.

Peugeot 208. It has petrol, diesel and full EV on the same platform. Maybe not a particularly thrilling car, but it offers different things to different people, important in todays changing landscape. Its also one of the more accessible EV's.

There's never been an A3 EV, only hybrid.

It is the same as the Golf GTE, 1.4 petrol engine plus electric motor.
