I need to source some replacement bolts for my hifi rack, but am at a bit of a loss. They are Allen key/hex head, and require a square nut as this locates automatically in the rack. How do I go about figuring out what I need? I believe that they are 1/16" thick, but want to be sure that I am converting correctly into what seem to be the standard 'M' size before I think about ordering.
Rack manufacturer about as much use as the proverbial chocolate teapot...

Do you have a nut or a bolt you can take to a local ironmonger?
We have a great guy just along the road who is a real old fashioned gem. It doesn't matter what size, thread or material, he always has something. He will even cut bolts down in length and then clean up the thread.

In screw & bolt nomenclature, the 'M' refers to the diameter in mm; thus M6 is a 6mm diameter thread and so on. Of course, you also need the correct pitch, which is a whole other ball game!

Square nuts of varying hole diameters are available from RS components for pennies. You'll need to know the diameter of the bolts first, obviously.

OK, will have a look. These ones are tiny - they don't hold up the shelves, they tighten the shelf clamps so bear no real load.

A real man would have jars and jars of spare nurs and bolts of every size in his garage or shed...
I'm not sure exactly what it is you need from the description though.

Manufacturer eventually came through, so it's one item of manly knowledge that may forever elude me!
