Although - the flare of revs when you start it can be a PITA when you leave the house at 6am, instantly shifting into D or R will drop the idle speed, but the damage is done when it first barks into life. I understand the facelifted car has quiet start mode for unannounced dawn departures (which would be very useful). I know the feeling. I do have an exhaust off button which I press every morning but in reality I don't think it quietens the car much on that initial start up. Mine flares up to c2,000 and then settles at 1,500rpm for about 45s on a coldish morning before settling down to about 800rpm.

I think this is just a feature of most recent multi-cylinder cars, as the cats have to be warmed quite quickly for emissions purposes. The T6 used to be loud at start up, with high idle revs for a good 10 to 12 seconds. I heard a M140i yesterday and that also started with a flurry of revs. It can't be that good for engine wear, but I guess it's a balance between that and getting the cats warmed up?

Glad you're still enjoying it. The new facelifted ones sound good value compared to their predecessors, might you get a stint in the mid-range V8 one next year sometime?

No doubt the Covid situation has altered our perception of the passing of time somewhat, but I’ve had this for 9 months now and covered 5000 miles.
Since commuting stopped in mid March, the last 700 miles have been purely for pleasure (err...shopping and essentials gathering) and its been an integral part of keeping me sane whilst the rest of the world has been going crazy. As soon as it barks into life the malaise of the week just drains away and i’m grinning like a loon. I really do love the way it sounds and it is such an crucial part of the overall experience, whether you woofle it gently through the gears or wind it out to the redline, it’s just tremendous fun.
The fair weather and quiet roads have resulted in some wonderful early morning drives in what is a fantastic machine.
