Do it today - don't wait for retirement, I know too many people who have made plans for their retirement and didn't make it or died within months of retiring. We had a guy here who made all the plans to retire and buy a Harley. When he did retire 4 months later he was diagnosed incurable cancer and went quickly. Don't put off to tomorrow what you want to do today.
If you want a Mustang put a photo of it next to your shaving mirror. You'll look at it every day and within 6 months I reckon you'll have worked out a way to get it.
Or have grown a beard.

Well mine too, if we're talking about a V8 Mustang (or something similarly worthy of driving for the sake of driving). But an X1 seems neither fish nor fowl in that particular respect.
I suppose there might be somebody out there whose bucket list of things to do before they die contains the item "own a BMW X1"...

5 Series GT?? Have you bumped your head? I never liked the 5 series GT, the grille was way, way too small.... Dare I say that compared to the recent X7, that looks positively understated. Not something I thought I'd ever hear myself say about the 5GT.

Not something I thought I'd ever hear myself say about the 5GT. A friend bought a 5 Series GT and we went to collect it. He hadn't mentioned the GT bit so I had to bite my tongue and make all the right noises. On the test drive he asked me how the room was in in the back to which I replied "great", "Yes" said the salesman "they make smashing taxis!". I'm not sure that's what my mate wanted to hear and bought it anyway as it was a good deal and sure enough, when he went back to the dealership 3 years later to choose another new car they offered him peanuts for it as they didn't want a black sheep on their forecourt. After seeing my 4 Series Touring he bought the coupe version.

A 4 series Touring would be lovely! Kind of like a BMW CLS shooting brake.

The 5GT in the link looks pretty terrible (even for one of them). It must be the colour. What it really needs is a lot more styling flourishes, I mean there are only half a dozen or so different lines on the rear.
Poor.

The nicest thing I can say about those it that they're staid. I don't think I've seen one driven by a person below the age of 65 yet and they all appear to be in a fairly modest spec - smallish wheels, no pimp glass, etc.

BMW UK have been very helpful to my enquiry and have found out that apparently you can call up a temperature display in one of the variable fields at the base of the instrument panel. They are also running a 24 hour test drive experience so I have put my name forward...... nope, it's not my "dream car" and am open to offers, although I suspect that I may well end up sticking with the Kuga for a while longer

Have you looked at how much a new 3-series touring costs ?? Horrific IMHO Yes but you shouldn't be paying list price. A 68 plate 320d with 8 or 9k miles will be in the low 20s which is the same as the Mondeo I wanted to look at that was a similar age/mileage.

Whilst they are preferable, when was the last time you needed to use a water temp gauge? Every journey I drive - to check that the engine is warming up correctly. I've already posted that I've spotted issues in several cars over the years due to errant temperature gauge readings, including my parents 145 The Captur has no water temp gauge and that seems to be no issue to you. Chris, stop inventing barriers where there are none.

The wife is the main driver of the Captur, and it does at least have a blue light on when the engine is cold, so when it goes out you know that the engine is warming up even if it has not yet got to normal operating temperature.
From what I have seen of the video clips of the new Captur, the water temperature gauge has made an appearance, which has to be a good thing in my books

Because it didn't always come on when you turned the car on (admittedly possibly because the ambient temperature was so high) so the first time it did I got a surprise.

The VRS has an oil temperature gauge, which I rely on instead. It's surprising how long it can take to warm up in the winter.
Gauges are often only a badic visual representation anyway. The original Mazda MX-5 had a 'proper' oil pressure gauge which varied depending on engine load, as you would expect. Customer clinics suggested this worried customers, seeing it vary all the time, so Mazda changed it fir what was in effect a dummy gauge - it sat still in the middle of the dial and if there was no oil pressure it just went to zero. It was basically on or off. Most water temp gauges are the same - they will sit at the same point until it over heats and then just hit the red, with no in between warning that the temperature is rising. So, a light will just do the same job.

With the price of razor blades these days one could probably quit shaving and have a tidy savings pot by the end of a year!

I think I reckoned it took my Alfa GT 4 times as long to reach the normal oil temp as it did the equivalent water temp. However, on a regular, known route you could see a difference in the speed of warm up if you gave it a bit more throttle away from junctions.

It's getting close to the time of year when great deals can be done again.
I have just had an e-mail from Bowker BMW with a whole load of well specced demos etc which can be had at much discounted prices. No doubt new cars in stock will be available at even better deals.

I'd better hope I can get a new, better-paid job soon then, so I can afford an X1.......
