Captur

So Hertz’s “500x or similar” at Catania airport turned out to be neither a 500x nor a Troc, but rather a Captur. We had it for 10 days and 1,000kms.
On the plus side, it was brand new (30 kms on the clock) and quite a ritzy version with super bright LED headlights, full touchscreen nav, a reversing camera and a goodly dose of other FG. The light cream-coloured contrast roof was also an excellent idea in the scorching heat of a Sicilian summer. And being SUV-ish and thus in possession of reasonably good ground clearance plus some sort of twisty knob with an "off-road" setting, it was unperturbed by the many rutted dusty tracks we encountered when accessing various hotels and wild beaches.
On the considerable downside it had a very small and gutless 0.9 petrol turbo engine with a paltry 89bhp. It was odd because it initially felt quite perky when you pulled away (the turbo kicking in I guess, as it could otherwise bog down horribly at low revs in 1st or 2nd), but had very little oomph above about 50mph. Genuinely it was a struggle to cajole it up to the Italian motorway speed limit of 130kph (about 80mph). It’s been a long time since I’ve had to drive a car whose natural motorway cruising speed was about 60-65mph. This also translates to pretty poor fuel economy and range. Ok, it was new which doesn't help, and the fuel tank is only 45l, but when full, it showed a maximum range of 450kms, which was pretty accurate because over 1,000kms it duly chewed through two full tanks of fuel (two refills at a quarter remaining, plus a last top-up before the airport from half-full). That's an average of 31mpg. I'd have had better fuel economy from my 440i!

Even in a hire car? They can usually be thrashed up to any speed required. It must have been truly awful in that case.

Did you have the Eco button on? That would kill performance, it made the 1.5dci awful to drive

Both my wife's car and mine have one, so am well aware of their strangulating effect.
It was fully hopeless with Eco on. I looked the figures up - 0-60 in 13.3 seconds and allegedly a top speed of 106mph. That's presumably one-up and downhill with the wind behind you.

Clearly it's the car for Nicole's younger, considerably less racy, sister..

Thankfully ours isn't as bad as that! Hopefully the new model is better.

I was trying to remember who had a Captur and had complained that it was underpowered! Not me ! Having test driven the 0.9, it was quite obvious that this was not the engine to get. What would interest me is how they get driven by the French in France. It's a long, long while since I have driven any distance in France (just the one business trip from CDG across northern Paris a few years back, prior to that I can't recall) but my memory is that they thrash their cars everywhere. With the 0.9 Captur being so comparatively underpowered for a family car, I bet many of the 0.9 engines have taken a real caning; wonder how they stand up to that treatment?

Could have been me complaining about Mrs M's Captur in Eco mode! The 1.2tsi DSG in the Yeti is positively spritely in comparison!

I was startled by quite how lethargic it was on the motorway, because as mentioned the initial acceleration from standstill can be misleadingly brisk if you give it a prod. It could however bog down even in first at low revs in a way I've never encountered in a petrol engine before. More than once I literally had to depress the clutch, rev the engine and then release the clutch again in order to get the car going again.
