Now that's an interesting motor
If its the car I think it is, I still have the Clarkson VHS this thing featured in.

Interesting. There are a couple of fully restored Overfinch RR's on that site for very silly money - north of £50k. My money would go somewhere like here. Late soft dash V8 auto in what looks like decent condition. Boy do I regret selling mine all those years ago.... www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1041346

It always looks a bit more dated to my eyes They were the last couple of years. Basically front airbags, neater aircon and stereo placement. Older RR's had instruments that dated back to the Montego era. Soft dash had stuff from the Rover 800 era.

I ran two soft dash RR's. A 300 Tdi diesel (for 40,000 miles from new) and then a V8 Vogue SE (8,000 up to 80,000 miles). Both were reliable. I know, shocking isn't it. The V8 broke down once and that was when the fu^^ing garage had not screwed the radiator drain cap back in properly and all the coolant ran out. But I was slavish is sticking to the 6k service intervals and they were never used for serious off roading, but did do a lot of towing.
What killed the V8 was the air suspension was packing in and that was very expensive to fix, so I traded it on a day it was working. Some will have had the air suspension replaced with springs - a lot of the diesels had springs and the parts were interchangeable.
I guess like all older cars, if they have been neglected at any time in their lives, they will become unreliable and expensive quite quickly.
I'm undecided whether the RR to go for now is a late model P38 (the next shape) as Classics have already hit the price elevator in a big way. TP38's are still just about in the unloved category and those built after 2000 had much better reliability then earlier ones. Although I do see prices for the late ones on the climb v a couple of years ago.

Ooh agreed - nice. I do love a classic first-gen Rangie. Dad had two when I was a teenager. The first was a Westminster Grey 3.9 Vogue SE (with a manual gearbox!) and the second was a 4.2 Vogue LSE that was affectionately referred to by the whole family as "Boris". I remember going with my father to the London Motor Show at Earls Court in I guess 1992 and seeing the then brand-new LSE on the LR stand resplendent in a bronzey-green colour called Mosswood with a dark tan "saddle" interior. Dad liked it so much he ordered his in exactly the same colour combination.
It was a sad day when Boris made way for an entirely less charming and very unreliable P38 4.6 HSE.

That does look nice, but for nostalgic reasons I'd want mine in Mosswood and I'd want to have the lovely burled reddish rosewood trim that Dad's had.

Range RoverThat looks a lot like Boris, which was also an Italian car and also didn't have the usual pinstripe down the side. However, Boris wore Rome number plates (although back then, when cars changed hands, so did the plates, so that's not necessarily any guide) and my recollection is that Dad had the "Range Rover" lettering removed fore and aft.

Dad always de-badges his cars, which on his Audis includes having the four-ring emblem removed from the rear tailgate (although he leaves it on the front grille).
I saw that car at the Belgravia car show a few weeks back. If you look at the photos in my post you can see it.

Are you set on an LSE? Whilst I appreciate that the extra leg room is good in the back, I prefer the more compact standard wheelbase versions.

I think the 4.2 was a better engine than the 3.9, although the air suspension on LSEs is notoriously troublesome
