It’s smart on the outside. The living is unfinished and the horse area is old fashioned, but it has a modern chassis cab which was my priority and it is solid!

Finally got the V5 back from DVLA (nearly 4 weeks it's taken them!) for the Octavia and got my plate on it. Looks much better now! (IMHO, of course. )

Bloody fed up of being the damned house taxi ride. Monday - boy to Air cadets for 7, collect at 10 Tonight - her ladyship to her monthly girls night at 6.30, possible collect at 11 unless she decides on a joey Wednesday - race back from physio to collect kids from youth club at 5.15 (not normally a bother as it'd be on the way home from work, but a pain for the next 5 weeks) Thursday - girl to DOE for 6.30, collect at 9 Friday - nip out of work at 3.15 to take girl to her ladyship's school for the summer fair. Then at 5, take boy to Southport for Airshow with cadets, collect around 10 (normally it'd be cadets at 7, collect at 10) Saturday - airshow Sunday - take boy to Southport for 9am for air show duties with the cadets
You'd think her ladyship would at least volunteer to do some of it, but noooo, 'I've got planning/marking/school shit to do'

^ I can sympathise, been through this myself when our girls were younger. In some ways I count myself fortunate that although I didn't (and still don't) have a great job at least at the time I worked near home and could generally leave on time to be home to start family taxi-driving duties without too much of a rush after work.
(and my wife didn't work, but delegated me to do all the running around.....)

Not going this year due to the change in timing; too close to being in Milan and we're pretty rooked, like I knew we would be. Still booked the Friday-Monday off mind you!

Car insurance costs are dropping apparently, according to this copied from the BBC website.
"The latest figures on car insurance suggest costs are dropping relatively rapidly.
A fully comprehensive policy now costs around £496.80 compared to £526.07 a year ago - a 12% drop, according to price comparison website MoneySupermarket"
However, the fall they've noted is certainly not 12%!

I assume the error came about because they couldn't use either of their usual measures - a London bus or a football pitch related quantity?

Hello everyone. I realised I haven't been here for months (if anyone's noticed ). It's certainly not by intention. It's just that I've been mostly caught up with work over in Shanghai and I mostly just want to shut off from The Internets after hours. Also, internet connectivity is not exactly the best in China and rather than spend time getting frustrated at waiting for the VPN to connect just to get online, mostly I rather just not bother. I do miss this place though. I'm back in Singapore all this week so I'll try my best to pop around to see how you guys are doing. Cheers.

Is the poor connectivity because all the interweb power is directed at trying to hack Western databases and the like? Just a thought .. . .. . ..

The aircon at work has ceased to chill, pumping out warm air. So we're back to the old fashoined solution which is to open all the windows, however despite being on the 5th floor there's no breeze and its incredibly humid. Why do I have to wear a suit, I'm in danger of sitting in ball soup

I'd certainly suit that outfit better than most of the females here but it would encourage them so I'll keep covered up in the meantime!

Why do I have to wear a suit, I'm in danger of sitting in ball soup Working for a US tech firm had its advantages and disadvantages. But one of the definite advantages was not having to wear a suit, or even a tie to work. Plus dress down Friday was still a thing. And when you don't wear a suit to start with, we did occasionally have to remind people not to take Friday's too far......

The undertakers removed the body of our neighbour last week. She was in her 70's but always appeared to be fit and well and worked on her garden a lot. Diagnosed with cancer about 2 months ago and now gone!

I was stunned on New Year's Day when a friend's wife phoned to say he'd passed away due to cancer at 54 on Xmas Eve. I didn't even know he was ill and we don't live local. He didn't want anyone to know and he'd already been buried. It was all so quick and final and I felt grief and anger that he hadn't confided in me but also admiration that he just decided he didn't want all the awkwardness of last meetings and sympathetic silences and to go in his own way.

The partner of Mrs Tim's best friend had a heart attack last week, not serious as such since he got home on Friday, but the alarming thing is that he's 1 day younger than me.
He has spent a lot of years smoking, he's worked permanent nightshift for about 25 years and his diet is atrocious since his partner is a care home nurse who also works shifts. It still suddenly made me feel old and vulnerable.

I just heard a colleague of mine passed away yesterday. All I’ve heard from work is that they were told by the police, which is quite worrying. She did her back in a few years ago and has been on and off work ever since. It has been noticed this year that she’s been acting almost as if she’s drunk when she has been at work which was due to the high strength painkillers she’d been on. I can’t help thinking that she’s perhaps taken too many painkillers or the wrong combination of them. It’s been incredibly sad to see a once quite cheerful woman become a shell of utter misery over the last year or so.

It’s been incredibly sad to see a once quite cheerful woman become a shell of utter misery over the last year or so. Something I tell people who come to see us a lot more than I sometimes think I need to; physical pain and mood state are inextricably linked, no matter who you might be and how "strong" you believe you are. I know someone who suffers (horribly) from glossopharyngeal neuralgia, probably one of the most debilitating neuralgic disorders there is. It's only in the past few years since the docs found a combination of analgesics that work reasonably well for him, that I've known him even able to smile, never mind feel like it! These types of disease are up there with MS, MND, Huntigton's Disease and Parkinson', to name but a few, hat would have me reaching for the Beretta sooner rather than later. Nursed too many people with them over the years to have anyone I loved watching me go through that.

Apart from the sadness at an early death, now I'm retired, seeing people of your own age group dying gives me a real dilema. Spend, spend, spend as we may all be dead tomorrow v that pension pot's got to last till we're old..... Tricky dilemma that. We get a pension review at work each year and the chap who used to come in from the pensions firm we use was always on at us to keep upping our contributions as people live longer and you need as big a pot as you can possibly afford. I suspect he was squirrelling away a fair bit yet, sadly, he died earlier this year of a heart attack in his late 50’s without ever getting to draw any of it. I suppose its it’s all about balancing your enjoyment of what you’ve worked hard for and ensuring you don’t spunk it all up the wall and are left destitute or unable to go to a decent care home should you ever need one or being unable to leave anything to your kids if you have them.

Mrs Tim recently got a small tube of facial moisturiser that has an SPF of 30 and it's made by a French company called Vichy.
Surely that's almost as bad as if a German company called its products Nazi.
