Yep: soft close doors are the bollocks. I tend to forget on hire cars that they don't have them.

They're great, like soft close toilet seats. Only problem with them is when you're visiting a mates and they don't have them. What a racket that makes!

I totally agree but it doesn't stop them being bloody marvelous.

Having had a bonnet fly up on me twice I'm firmly in the "if you're going to shut it make sure it's shut" brigade.

We have them on all our toilets but the en-suite. In the semi-darkness the other night I forgot - what a noise that makes in the dead of night. Mrs. Sacamano was out of bed and half way down stairs with a cricket bat thinking we were being burgled.

You know we've reached "peak frippery" when soft closed doors are considered essential!

All the loos in our house are fitted with soft-close lids, but the one in the bathroom nearest our bedroom has recently failed and yes the resulting bang in the middle of the night the other day was a bit of a shock to all concerned.

Yep: soft close doors are the bollocks. Right up there with strobey indicators and lighty up speakers in my opinion. Both of which my car has, annoyingly!

Not at all, because soft close doors really do increase the feeling of quality/luxury. They’re something you only appreciate when you’ve lived with them for a while. The simple fact is that everyone on the forum who has them really like them.....

My 2002 Toyota has them, as standard, on the sliding rear doors.

Sadly not, apart from the final pull shut, although some versions of the same era did have them. I'll make sure the next one has them and the electric tailgate!

I don’t get the point of them ? What’s wrong in just closing the door ?

I don’t get the point of them ? What’s wrong in just closing the door ? I think it's just like when you drop your Lexus off for a service and the Service Adviser massages your scrotum with a warm chamois. It's totally not necessary but you appreciate it.

There are massaging seats for that kind of thing! Totally pointless until you experience it. I don't need to consider slamming the door, I just pull it gently on to the first latch and the car pulls the door shut: silent luxury. It is also quiet with no loud car door closing sound and gives the neighbours 5 secs more sleep before I start it up in the morning. I would now option this if it was a choice I could make: it adds to the feel good factor.

And I can’t say the ‘loud door closing sound’ has bothered me yet . If you ever Come to geneva I’d recommend these as a precaution as there’s a lot of car doors opening and closing

My brother-in-law's just picked up a £1,200, 190k mile 2003 530d estate that has fully functioning factory-fitted massage seats.........

I have one neighbour who seems to think that his car door needs to be closed with all the might he can muster - that is after he has put his jacket on the back seat and his briefcase in the boot, slamming both openings as hard as he can. Thankfully he leaves after me on 99% of mornings but my daughter complains about him all the time. He really should be introduced to the pleasures of soft close.
I am sure 20 years ago that most people thought that heated seats were a completely unnecessary piece of FG, as were electric seats and keyless entry but these things have become much more popular as drivers have experienced them and then decided they want them on their next car. Soft close doors are no different - you don't need them but once you have them you don't want to do without.
