Read up carefully on the Sony. Not sure if it's the same model but I know people have had issues with Sonys not playing certain discs. There's a Panasonic with a similar affliction, if I recall correctly. The Cambridge one has just been upgraded, I think and is a good bet. Thanks Simon, I’ll do some research.

There was a thread on the What Hifi forum but that folded when they changed publishers a while ago. AV Forums will be the place to look now probably.

Our holiday TV set was a Hisense, a Chinese make offering large screen size for little outlay. My advice would be don't, at least not at the moment. Resolution and colour were pretty good, but the backlighting is awful. Backlit screens all suffer some negative effects, but often you have to be looking for them to see them. Not so with this one - it's as though it has a certain amount of brightness that it wants the screen to show in total, and when you cut from a dark to a light scene and vice-versa, there's a delay before it 'adjusts' - which it the does with a very heavy hand. Tolerable for a bit of holiday viewing, but would drive me nuts as a permanent setup.

I got my mum a Hisense 49 inch I think from RS and the picture in HD was great considering how amazingly cheap it was . I cracked the screen on it when we were moving her stuff into her new place , and I went straight back to RS to get another but they didn’t have any in stock . Ended up with a Panasonic that was about £75 more and I don’t think there’s much in it picture quality wise

^ Most TVs are made in a handful of factories in China and are just badged for the various manufacturers... I looked into this a year or two ago. OK so some manufacturers will have their own parts of the design, but again there are a limited number of screen manufacturers.
Ah yes, I recall when I looked into this, when younger daughter's TV she got from Argos keeled over just after the warranty ended. Local repair shop said he had about one query a week ref failed Bush TVs and you couldn't get spares for them. Argos were very good and after a little pushing refunded the proportional balance of purchase price based on a 5 year product life with a voucher that younger daughter promptly put towards a Samsung TV

That's not true, Chris. Up until relatively recently, TV OLED screens were all LG.
(Maybe Hisense have improved - I have no idea how old this one was - but the issues affecting every backlit set I've ever seen aren't apparent to everyone - until you notice them or have them pointed out, after which they are hard to ignore.)

My info is a couple of years out of date, but the acceptable / expected level of failures for Bush TVs in the warranty period was around 15% which seemed very high to me

How you getting on with the C8 Martin ? Have you had it calibrated? Fantastic TV. I haven’t had it calibrated but did find some recommended settings on the Internet which were an improvement on the std ones.

My dad has bought a 55 inch (i think) LG smart TV and so I now have, again, the 46 inch Panasonic plasma that I had from new in about 2007/8. Damn thing weighs a ton and is huge due to quite a big surround for the screen. I don't have any spare cash for a new TV at the moment, so the lardy Panasonic remains as long as it still works. I also have a smart meter now and the plasma doesn't half use some electricity!

My 2012 Sony Bravia is mostly working and will have to soldier on 'till it croaks.
