I looked under both ends and to be fair it's easy to see where the money went. The suspension arms are huge and reassuringly chunky. I can't get over how much better the steering is, though. How many miles has the car done now?

66k, I bought it with 30ish on it.

I've done a few motorway miles recently and I'd noticed a vibration when braking form speed. It turns out a rear caliper had seized. I had the disks replaced along with that caliper and it not only got rid of the vibration but also the car is smoother and the fuel economy has improved! I've got a new piece of contracting work which will take me to Alderley Edge once a week so I'm weighing up what I should do car wise as it probably makes sense to get something else to absorb those miles.

Instead of or as well as?

In addition. I've been looking at Mk7.5 Golf GTIs but I'm reluctant to buy anything with the premiums currently attached to used cars.

We went to look at a 308GTI years ago as I quite liked the look of them and thought they were a bit different, but it was awful just poking around it in the showroom. It's £5k less than a Golf GTI for a reason plus that is a GT which performance wise is more Golf R Line than GTI. But no idea is a bad idea! I really liked the Clubman that the ex Mrs Martin had, helped by it being a really nice spec with lovely soft (Lounge) leather, but it was also fun to throw around. It does look and I bet it feels a bit dated now, but the only think I didn't really like at the time was the torque steer, especially when overtaking.

Having had both styles of modern Clubman, the current shape model is a far more refined mile muncher.

I was merely thinking of things that weren’t obvious and therefore might not be caught up in the current pricing silliness.
I’ve had a 308 as a hire car and my sister in law has an estate one. Yes a Golf is nicer (your model or older that is), but there’s nothing actively horrid there in my view. Unlike the new Golf 8 which is pretty grim.

Great colour! I'd be looking for one with DCC, even if it only had the 18" wheels. Post 2019 means DPF, but they also increased the std spec at that time to include keyless entry/start, reversing camera and voodoo LED lights. Lane keep assist as well, but that's not something to be excited about... Very nice, but what a crazy price, we paid less than £5k more than that for the R which is a much better spec as well as a more expensive car to start with.

I suppose a 128ti is a competent device but I just wouldn’t.

The 128ti has had some excellent reviews and I believe it’s beaten Golfs various in group tests.
I’d have one over any GTI, especially the Mk8 with its awful interior.

Yes, well I wouldn't have one of those either.
I just don't like the new 1-series. Does nothing for me at all. I liked the last two generations because they were different and quirky, and could be had with a straight six. This new 1-series just flatlines from an interest perspective as far as I'm concerned and I don't like the styling.

If you're going to buy a new 1 Series, buy a Mini.

I'm not going to die in a trench over the 1 series - it was an example of a reasonable lease deal vs paying a King's ransom for a used car.

A friend has just bought a Disco 4 GS. He was really wanting a HSE, but it seems the majority have a coal black interior and he wanted a beige one.
Anyway, he found a lovely green pearl one with beige, optional leather with only 60k miles and FSH.
I had a drive this evening. It is lovely.

I’ve had my Discovery 4 years today. To celebrate it’s getting a service involving getting the belts changed. I’ve got a Freelander on the drive as a courtesy car. I’ve renewed the warranty for another year and if it still has under 100k on the clock by the time it’s up I’ll renew it again. It’s a brilliant car and nothing else comes close to its versatility.
