What little hunger for racing he had, he's lost.

Team orders will take him most of the way but his unforced errors will have to be addressed.

I wonder when Ferrari will look 'to the future' and change their focus to Leclerc.

I wonder when Ferrari will look 'to the future' and change their focus to Leclerc. They might - he's certainly stolen the limelight from Vercrashen and has been pinpointed as a champion of the future.

They still have a little something up their sleeve. Similar performance to their Renault engine times. Easy peasy or do they know something no other Honda team does? The sloped floor thing is pretty universal with the degree of rake among the field.

Remember when the diffuser was turned down, all of a sudden Webber was right with him, I think they appealed and the diffuser was allowed turned back up, but not to the original level and he was out performing Webber again. I'm afraid he's done now, he won't win another championship.

He just doesn't seem able to cope very well when he is under real pressure.

I wish Ferrari would do the deed and back LeClerc, like the labour partly they are supposed to offer a credible opposition, their tactics ruined what could have been a great come back.

Well, maybe Vettel should talk to his employer before complaining about the dominance of one team. His employer wants to retain unlimited budgets and technical resources. But it’s gotten so out of hand, now even a manufacturer like Renault can’t compete at the front. Mercedes and Ferrari agree on a lot of things, which is why you never hear Ferrari complain about Mercedes’ dominance. In fairness, at least Ferrari are consistent about demanding what they want. What I would point out, is that F1 when to a standardised ECU, banned qualifying engines, got rid of unlimited testing – none of it made a material difference to the outside viewer. Today, you never hear anybody mourn any of the ridiculous spending that used to take place. Naturally, the bigger teams protest that F1 would collapse without ten element front wings and £300 million engine budgets. But that has always been the case. It’s for the regulator and organiser to resist lobbying from the biggest teams and their vested interests. The structure doesn’t need tweaking; it needs totally scrapping. One of the biggest issues has been the creation of the F1 commission, where the F1 teams have their say. It’s a bit like asking turkeys if they want to be slaughtered for Christmas.
As for Vettel, in three of the four races so far Leclerc has been quicker at some stage. And at some stage, Leclerc’s race has been badly compromised. In Shanghai and Baku Ferrari went too far, guaranteeing that Verstappen would finish ahead of him by leaving Charles out on old tyres. Full marks to Leclerc, he is outstanding. The blown floor suited Vettel’s driving style so well, particularly corner entry. He would throw the car into a corner in such a violent fashion, you swear the rear would unstick. In 2014, the downforce loss was drastic and he struggled to adapt to a totally difference aero package. I still think that Vettel is a great driver, but he isn’t versatile driving-wise like Hamilton. With Hamilton, with all the cars he has driven since 2007, it isn’t obvious to tell which era has suited him best, because he has adapted so well to each era. May I make the comparison, so did Michael Schumacher.

I think you have hit the nail on the head there, the problem is who is going to come up with a new structure and regulations without being widely criticised by everyone else inside (and most likely outside) the sport? Flat floors, no rear venturis/diffusers to screw up the airflow for cars that follow, 2 element front wings with extremely limited curvature allowed and no crap like dive planes (they look ridiculous on Merc AMG 45s) or the multi-element wing add ons, etc. Do away with DRS (if you think women only racing is contrived then what about DRS?) and again limit allowable curvature to things like the sidepods. Raise the ride height by 5cm and specify sensible minimum weights for a variety of key components, e.g. gearbox, engine. I remember reading, at least 10 years ago, that Williams (and undoubtedly the rest of the grid) had special qualifying only exhaust manifolds that cost £25k each side, saved 400 grammes and were good for about 5 laps. Assuming that sort of insanity still goes on then ban it - as a society we're meant to be moving towards sustainability and that's the opposite!

That's just it, the mega spending insanity goes on, but instead of being on limited life span components/engines/tyres it's all spent on bloody aero shit and electronics to provide 'relevance'. Because that's just what I think of when I see the fog light flashing on an F1 car 'Oh look, it's harvesting energy just like my hybrid shitbox/3 ton 4X4'.

Tackling issues with the cars is one thing but what about the spreading of the sport's sponsorship/income, prize money etc? Is it fair that Ferrari should get so much just because they have been in from the beginning and are perceived as being "key"? That aspect also needs a full re-write (IMHO)

Yup, good point Chris. I think it could be achieved gradually, maybe they need to change the ownership model and give the teams a proper stake.

I hear you and that would be fantastic but would leave us with what they have in CART/Indycars or whatever its called nowadays. I recently watched the race they held in Austin and compared to F1 the spectacle was so much weaker. If you want close racing watch the BTCC but F1 is as much about technology as it is the racing and fancy wings gives us the huge corning speeds that make F1 so special. I do agree with you on the whole and would love to see costs reduce and have close racing but think its near impossible to deliver without ruining F1's usp Flat floors, no rear venturis/diffusers to screw up the airflow for cars that follow, 2 element front wings with extremely limited curvature allowed and no crap like dive planes (they look ridiculous on Merc AMG 45s) or the multi-element wing add ons, etc. Do away with DRS (if you think women only racing is contrived then what about DRS?) and again limit allowable curvature to things like the sidepods. Keep the diffuser size sensible and they might even be able to follow one another. Anyhoo, back to Vettel. I've always been impressed with his speed when he can get out in front and run away with everything perfect, less so with his actual racecraft/overtaking and ability to manage a car that's not quite perfect. Could you see him doing a Ricciardo at Monaco or do we think he'd have parked it?

Could you see him doing a Ricciardo at Monaco or do we think he'd have parked it? I think you're right, his in-pack racing is sometimes clumsy at best. Wasn't Schumacher quite similar, except that for most of his career he started near the front and buggered off quickly anyway? Not so much after he came back for Merc though.
