I think it looks fine. Not spectacular or outstanding, but generally okay.

Will be interesting to see how a more ‘sporty’ front bumper looks, but I’m not a fan either based on those pictures.

Indeed; I wonder what the estate version will look like, and what engine options there will be

I struggle to tell the difference between the 6 and 7. This is more of the same and I can't get even a tiny bit excited about it. Only a matter of time until they're in the weeds on airbags, with gigantic wheels and camber.

I think you'll find there is some black tape disguise still remaining on the headlight surrounds on the bonnet and on the top of the bumper where it meets the headlights. Quite attractive in my eyes, obvious that it's a Golf

Stackmann also confirmed there will be no e-Golf in the next generation to avoid overlap with the ID hatch and the range will instead "end with the GTE" in terms of electrification, with all future electric VWs based on the firm's dedicated electric platform.
BMW tried to have a separate electric brand (i3, i8) and now have said pretty much that they'll do electric versions of the usual suspects. If the above comment from the article is true, then VW are where BMW were some years ago. An electric Golf is bound to come along - they won't want to lose the Golf nameplate.

Indeed; I wonder what the estate version will look like, and what engine options there will be Rumour has it there won’t be one. Too many buyers prefer the T-Roc and Tiguan. Agree it looks like a Golf and is certainly more evolution than revolution. I think it’s still too disguised to make a proper judgement.

Is this the end of the Golf? Id be incredibly surprised if that was the case. This new one has a rather different set of proportions, looking at those photos, with a longer wheelbase, perhaps (more like current Octavia?) and that rather odd bonnet line, which is presumably to comply with pedestrian impact regs.

Need to see it in real life, but I quite like the Mk7.
Another new car which looks a bit crap compared to its predecessor is the Audi A1. What a horrible-looking car. They actually expect you to pay more for a jumped up Polo. Good luck selling that....and it looks like I'm the stupid one. Over the weekend I saw three, two on 19 plates, not bad for such a new car.
The old S1 always appealed, especially as it exclusively had a manual.

Looks like they just hit the Mk 7 with the same ugly stick they used to update the Scirocco, which means the Golf, to my eyes at least, continues on its downward spiral.

Looks like a Golf; an evolutionary update. No matter what we (or anyone else) thinks these things fly out of the showroom: the 7 year old Mk7 was STILL the biggest selling car in Europe last year and the third biggest seller in the world.
This one will be no different in terms of sales and will be the benchmark against which all medium sized hatches are measured.

Agreed, there was one in the showroom a few weeks back when I took younger daughter's A1 in for its service and MoT. It's no wonder that the Volvo V60 is being praised for its looks, most new cars these days are so ugly. I'm sure that we cannot blame legislation for this trend of poor styling

I was behind mid-range versions of the latest 2 Polos at traffic lights recently and the older one looks so much less boring than the new one!

I have always liked the MK5 myself. It is showing its age these days but I do remember when it arrived in 2004 and suddenly made the mk4 look really old, it was light years ahead and massive leap forward in design terms. The mk6 and mk7 have certainly been about evolution although the latter is certainly a massive step ahead internally over the 5 and 6. The dashboard of the 5 does look particularly dated compared to the 7.

Chris Harris is working his way through the top 10 best sellers and is in a 1.0 Polo at the moment. He’s impressed with pretty much everything, especially the refinement, interior quality / equipment and big car in a small package feel. Shocked with the price though (as we’ll all be) which is £26k with some options!

It was expensive to build and a step back in interior quality though, something VW acknowledged and put right for the Mk6.

Just shows how hard it is to judge a car when you don't crawl over and in it. I remember the first pictures and thinking it looked great. The MK4 Sara almost got was shocking inside imho, that plastic would give anyone concussion just looking at it.
