Funny you should post that. I've recently started watching Rainman Ray and saw that a few days ago.

I have to admit to the hair remaining on the back of my neck electrifying and a huge grin was had. Thanks for that.

It looks like someone has decided to put a better face on the new M3/M4:

I am enjoying Jodie Kidd's new channel - the Tuthill Porsche and Mrs Mason giving a 250GTO the beans on the way to lunch are particular highlights

How impressive is the base 2.0 Cayman?! Very is the answer, especially from 50-100mph in 3rd gear. I bet the GT4 forums are going mental right now…..

I saw that video and wondered what a 4 cylinder S or GTS could have done. Maybe they aren't as bad as some people make them out to be?

They're probably really good cars, but the Queefs of this world bemoan anything with less than 6 cylinders because they don't sound as nice.

Clearly manual gearboxes are a complete hindrance. I was mega impressed with the PDK when I did the GT day and the abuse they can take means they’re likely a better bet than ham-fisted clutch burning by manual gear box launches. At road going speeds the base model looks like a 99% better bet than any GT option. Only cock waving rights are lost in that 1%.
As to the 6 cylinder issue: 356s were flat 4s. Not sure how many Porsche enthusiasts would say “no” to one….

You’d expect the PDK to close the gap on a standing start run, but not that much and what was even more impressive / surprising was how the base car pulled away when in 3rd gear at 50mph. I know some of that is gearing, but being in 3rd gear when making an overtake at 50mph is a very realistic situation.

It's a bit weird in the final race how the Mustang starts to keep pace with the GT4 (as they catch the base Cayman up) but then doesn't really get ahead of the Cayman. Wonder if they missed a gearchange.
Anyway I remember years ago pulling out of a junction in the M5 (400BHP) and someone in an E36 M3 (286 or 320BHP) pulling out behind me and them keeping up until we got to the point where I decided not to risk a ban. I felt a little deflated.
If I tried the same against a modern 4 pot superhatch I'd get slaughtered but at least I'd have a nice soundtrack assuming the 4 pot buzzing wasn't overwhelming.

An interesting test but if it was all about acceleration I'd be driving a Tesla Model 3 Performance for the same money and I dont want to do that.
Having driven all the Cayman/Boxster variants 981 and 718 (except spyder)I still wouldn't take the 718 turbos over a 981 let alone the 6 cylinder 718's. Ok maybe a 2.5GTS would be a pick over a 2.7 981 but thats about it. There is nothing wrong with the 718 but if you've driven the previous 6 pot which made the most glorious noise you'd always be disappointed. PDK is actually a better fit for the turbos as theres little enjoyment from stretching the engine in the 4 pot as its just a blare. If you've driven an Impreza in the 90's the engines a bit like that but stripped of the ability to race to the red line. Its not a moan about 4 pots as they have their place. Having also owned a EP3 and driven an S2000 they can be amazing units.
Off the test track the 2.0 just wouldn't live with the GT4, well unless it was wet, very bumpy or below 7 degrees! But a GT4 has that fresh off the racetrack look, very similar to an Exige and thats well worth the premium to me.
To evidence how little love there is for the 4 pots you just have to look at the reviews for the current GTS. The media wet themselves over it but Porsche built that exact car 4 years earlier in the 981GTS but they seemed to have forgotten about that.

Another fuelling around - this time with Mike brewer. Really interesting listen . I had no idea he did the forces series. I’m away at the minute but will catch up on it when I’m back .
