I do think it’s changing, but still some way to go. We mainly eat and drink at he locally owned places,
I wouldn’t go on an Elephant ride, just driving past a couple of those places today made me feel really uncomfortable. You could see small ones chained by the leg and used as a photo opportuniy. We’re booked in to visit an elephant sanctuary, one where they live in the jungle but come in voluntarily and you feed and bathe them plus the money you pay goes to looking after them. I’ll be honest, it’s more Lindsay’s choice, but that’s partly because I’m not massively keen on the idea of spending half a day getting muddy and paying £130 for the privilege.
Our whole trip was part of the "Presidents Club" from work. I got invited one year. So we had to do all the organised "voluntary" activities - the bosses were there... Left to our own devices I think we'd have explored more and tried to understand things a lot more before we did them.
Although if we had not done the elephant thing, we'd have missed the glorious sight of an American lady who knew very little about elephants trying to feed one. People were encouraged to buy a basket of fruit to feed the elephants. Hold out hand, elephant takes fruit with trunk and puts in mouth. Simples. Only this American lady clearly thought that the trunk was its mouth. The image of her trying to ram a banana up the poor elephant's trunk was priceless. The elephant could be seen thinking WTF??? Stupid person!
