If it’s a pleasure purchase then go for what your heart wants or you will never be satisfied.

If it’s a pleasure purchase then go for what your heart wants or you will never be satisfied. That's why I gave my example and said "Go for the M5". The M-B would I believe be what one of my former colleagues called the "sub-optimal solution".... it works, but it's not what you want

If I was going to spend £60k on a car (which I don't think I ever would even if I could afford it), it would have to be for a car I really wanted and had no compromise at all in the spec.

What a wonderful dilemma to have. I think the Mercedes would be an easy car to fall in love with. It's more stealth-like appearance would appeal to me and the 'I should have got a M5' would be offset by the happy wife. But I don't think you will be disappointed either way. Welcome back if you are the Chocy of old! Thanks. I have returned. My circumstances have changed and now have free Internet time again.

M5 is faster in pretty much every increment , so therefore it’s just better. in all seriousness I’d be going for the m5 (and waiting for the right car to come up if needs be) as that’s what you really want by the sounds of it

It’s 15% more economical and has a slightly larger tank, so less fuel cost and 50 miles more range. It’s also quieter on the motorway and 100kg lighter.
Easy decision!

Could you keep the 435 and buy a slow depreciation proper sports car like an R8 or a Vantage? I could but I don't have a garage big enough for anything interesting and I am fairly time poor, so being able to use and enjoy it would be an issue. I like the idea of it feeling special every day. Reduce your time commitments, then buy something less expensive but still hugely entertaining that you will then have more time to enjoy? Basically, work less, earn less, enjoy more. Probably not that easy but, you know, it's a nice idea!

Merc for the engine, M5 for pretty much everything else.

If you aren't changing the car, you certainly deserve to splash out on something - a month of solid 14-15 hour days would kill me...

This morning started at 3am for the last day and i'll probably get out of here about 9 or 10 tonight. Plenty of coffee. If I get up at 7am tomorrow it is going to feel like a massive lie in. Going to Gleneagles on Saturday for afternoon tea for a treat and if tomorrow morning is quiet in the office I'm closing the doors at lunchtime. I have some great staff who were still here with me last night after 10pm but it cost me a fortune in bonuses this month!

Having spent some time in a 530e with HK speakers yesterday, the B&W have moved up a notch to essential option.

Having spent some time in a 530e with HK speakers yesterday, the B&W have moved up a notch to essential option. It's one of my nearest dealerships, but I wouldn't go there again as I took an immense dislike to the sales manager there when I was looking at ordering the GC. Just all the features you dislike most in a salesperson wrapped into one obnoxious human being.

Weirdly that car isn't on the BMW Approved used site but it is on their own one.

I'm not sure that I can add much to the advice/debate already received, but for what it's worth I would say two things:
Remaining in your wife's good books is massively important if you love your wife; Choosing the car you really want to drive is massively important if you love driving.
Seeing as I'm pretty sure you tick both boxes, the decision is clear... wait for the M5! (or keep the 435, wait some more and add an R8 or GT4!)

Might also be worth hanging on to see what new PCP and lease deals materialise.
Over the past few years, BMW were offering some very competitive M5 PCP deals and Merc have a habit of venting excess AMG stock via tempting 2 year leases. It's a much safer way for them to dump unsold units and spare build capacity.
FWIW - The E63 is my choice, I think it's better looking, has the more appealing interior and it sounds so much better (very important element of the uber saloon).
Interesting performance stats, but I am sure there is a Carwow video on you tube that shows the exact opposite (E63s ever so slightly ahead in every increment)

FWIW - The E63 is my choice, I think it's better looking.... Which as we have said before just goes to show that we all have different tastes. I think the E-class looks horrid, the upward curve of the bottom edge of the rear lights is all wrong and same goes for other M-B vehicles, eg the C-class. I also don't like the shape of the rear pillars and rear screen of the current E-class, the estate is much better but still looks wrong to me. I'm also no fan of the 5-series styling but at least the current one is much better than the Bangle era ones.

The next M3 supposedly has X Drive on most models, with up to 500 bhp. Would you want to wait for that? 4WD, a lot lighter, and bloody fast.

I’m in an E Class at the moment, some way off an E63 admittedly (E220d SE) but the 5 is so much nicer inside and I’ve spent a few miles as a passenger in a 530e this week and the ride/refinement/seat comfort is much better despite it running on bigger wheels.
