Ill get a pouch tomorrow and try it out. Don’t have a letterbox so that’s never an issue. I don’t know what the distances involved are for these things but the key is kept quite far away from the front of the house anyway.

Summary execution for house breakers and car thieves would soon cut the numbers. These crimes really impact on ordinary people mentally and financially and some never fully recover, so the punishment should be severe (salt mine in Siberia?) When you hear of the sentences given to such dregs of society it's no wonder they re-offend and really don't care. Now, with custodial sentences less than 6 months being changed into community service orders there is more incentive to totally mess up the innocent majority. + 1 and then a million more. What too many in politics and the justice system view as petty crime, or crime with no real victim (well you're insured so what's the issue?), is seen by many normal people as henious and worthy of summary execution. And as is so often the case, the people are right and the masters are wrong. + another million !

The Newcastle Half Bricks taking on burglar, The Sunderland Cobblestones having a throw in against a couple of car thieves, while the Boro Gravel Tossers would have mass scatterings against shoplifters and the like. Just a thought.

Surely though the thefts of high value stuff are by 'organised crime' stealing to order so the stonings would have to be the Mr Bigs of that world?

Apropos the use of tins and special pouches, I just read this in Which (I know...an exciting Saturday evening):

When I bought my pouch I put the key in it and tried to open the door of the car. It refused entry. Same here.

Just a thought. What happens if you have two or three cars in the household and the keys are all kept together. Do the scroats get a scrambled signal of all the keys which is no use for any one car?

I doubt it - after all the ether is full of different radio waves but a radio can pick up each station without a problem, on Am, FM and SW (as an example)

Interestingly, and worth bearing in mind, I know of one chap who had an RF barrier pouch and used it at lot, often keeping it in his pocket. Through wear and tear the fine metal mesh gradually broke down and it stopped blocking signals. At work I've just seen the 2nd RS6 theft, by means of a very violent burglary, this week. Vile, low life scum. Those individuals are tooled up for breaking in and are armed, ready for confrontation and prepared to use violence. It really is getting worse. Earlier this week an i8 and M2 were taken from the same house, thankfully without confronting the owners. Luckily both cars had trackers and were located within a couple of hours.

I bought one of the pouches from Halfords. It's a bit clunky but seems to work ok. Only £10 so if it does degrade it can be quickly replaced. What I need now is for clothing companies to invent the jacket with an radio signal insulated pocket.

What I need now is for clothing companies to invent the jacket with an radio signal insulated pocket. I bought a pack of 2 x single key holders from Amazon for £6 and a large 2 x key holder for £7. Checked them on Sunday and they’re all working perfectly after just over 6 months.

The market for these high end vehicles is obviously valuable enough to make the risk of having to use violence worth the hassle. I’m sure that keeping your keys in a radio blocking box is a good idea but I can’t help wonder if surely it wouldn’t be better to have the thieves take the car without having to use force. Let’s face it, these guys are not messing about. They are coming to your house with a clear objective and I personally would prefer not to get in their way for the sake of a car which can be replaced far easier than dealing with traumatised children following a break in.

I agree with you Alex. I see the scanners and breaking/entering thieves as different, hence making is slightly more difficult for the former by storing the keys in a pouch when I’m at home. I wouldn’t get in the way of someone breaking in and threatening/using violence as difficult as it would be.

My advice would be to use a pouch and leave the keys in the kitchen at night (some people take them upstairs) and then the car cannot be taken by a relay device but if a violent thug breaks in, yhey can just take the car with much less personal risk.

That’s what we do. I’m the same, I don’t leave the keys by the door or on show from outside as I know insurance companies can use that as an excuse not to pay out but at the same time I don’t make them hard to find. If someone were to break in for them I’d rather not know about it until the morning than have someone wielding a baseball bat mucking around upstairs.

Indeed. One of the disadvantages of a private driveway (at least in central London where it is unusual) is that the thieves know which house the keys to which car are in. That we have a pair of heavy iron gates which are chained shut with a heavy-duty chain and padlock is hopefully a deterrent to the merely opportunistic burglar devoid of boltcutters. But as a precaution, we too keep the keys to both cars downstairs where they are not hard to find but equally nowhere near (or visible from) the doors or windows. We also have a pretty sophisticated police-linked alarm system that we set when we go to bed, so I hope that anyone breaking in would, upon setting off the very loud alarm, decide at most to just grab the car keys and run.

I wouldn't like to have to live like that.... I suppose another deterrent is that the main car has a reasonably distinctive number plate which passers-by may remember if asked to help Plod should it be stolen. I'm kind-of-hoping that it has a tracker fitted too

We have 160kg worth of large dogs to contend with should anyone try to break in. I honestly wouldn’t fancy their chances.

Should I start a new thread? Thought I'd give my Pixel phone's new-ish Night Sight feature a go and take a photo of the car outside work tonight. The darkness helps hide the filth it is currently covered in! God, look at the ride height of that RS3, it looks like a SUV!
