I've contacted Portsmouth Audi about the expensive S3 to say I'm interested but stressed I'm not happy about their finance offers. I expect I'll find out over the next couple of days if they can do anything about that... Is the S4 or S5 Sportback a non starter? You’d be getting a lot more of everything for your £40k.

I've got my 5 offers back on the S3 from carwow. Spec is metallic paint, Tech pack, sound and comfort pack, mag ride and matrix LEDs (plus badge delete for £0) for £36,194. Compared to the used one above it's missing 19" wheels, sunroof, self parking bobbins and frippery like red brake calipers, but I'm not bothered about any of those things. Do I just order new and probably get a better deal interest rate wise or use this offer as a bargaining chip on the readily available one? Buy new. Definitely. Sorts the interest rate issue and gets you what you want for several £k less, so will cost a lot less over the time you keep it.

Nano grey if you’re going for the Black Edition (not keen on those std wheels), if it’s the standard S3 then silver, as it helps disguise the overly shiny grille.
Black edition in grey (Daytona or Nano] with the 19” 5 arm alloys

Black edition appears to be off the cards if the Audi website is anything to go by... Can you add the black grille (black pack?) to the std model?

The Black Edition is on the Configurator App. All the price lists have disappeared....

We bought at the perfect time. You did, unlike me, who couldn't be looking at a more wronger time! Would you consider an M140i? There are some great deals on these at the moment.

M&S are doing personal loans at 2.9% apr at the moment for people who hold an M&S Credit Card or some other financial product. That is very very cheap money.

What do you really need all-wheel drive in a hatchback for?
I've been up and down vertiginous switchbacks in heavy snow in the Alps in my old M135i and the 440i without any difficulty given the right tyres. Not once have I thought damn this thing really needs 4wd.

Not once have I thought damn this thing really needs 4wd. The benefit is being able to use full throttle when it’s damp/wet, especially when your not going in a straight line. Having lived with AWD for a few months, I’m a bit of a convert. The M140i would benefit from AWD, along with better rear suspension, even in the dry it lacks composure on a twisty road.

Is that a frequent requirement? I wouldn’t say that, but it can be useful, it’s enjoyable and means you can use the performance you’ve paid for. If the alternative is FWD, then yes, it is a requirement.

I'm not sure that I don't think that having 4wd in powerful hot hatches doesn't encourage some drivers to drive beyond their own abilities.
I remember doing track work and advanced driving days in my S3 and there was nothing progressive about the point at which it lost grip. Basically it gripped and gripped, and then gripped some more in eg high speed avoidance/wet swerve tests, right until the point where it didn't whereupon the resulting loss of traction was instant and completely uncatchable for a driver of my modest talents. The M135i was like a duck on a frozen pond by comparison but it telegraphed it all clearly and the slides were catchable and controllable.
I think a key difference between an S3 and an M135/40i is that any old ham-fisted oaf can drive an S3 fast cross-country with minimal skill and little attention. To drive the BMW fast in similar circumstances demands that you pay attention and rewards you if you make the effort to read the road and drive the car in a balanced fashion. So to a degree it depends what floats your boat.

I’m sure it does, but a powerful rear wheel drive car in the wrong hands can be even more of a liability and that the road is no place for sliding around. It doesn’t really matter what wheels are driven, it’s the idiot behind the wheel that’s the issue.
I’m not too surprised about your thoughts on the old S3, I bet the new one is a lot better. The Golf certainly isn’t like that, you’re right that a ham fisted oaf could drive it quickly but it’s very adjustable and flows down a bumpy/twisty road really well, which is a lot of fun. I love my powerful RWD car as well, both float my boat but for different reasons.

That and I'm a ham fisted oaf. Supposedly. Relax sensitive socks! I never called you a ham-fisted oaf. I was making a more general comment to which you may be honourably excepted.
I've had two 4WD hot hatches myself - an A3 and an S3. They were very sure-footed but I picked them because I liked them, not because they were 4WD. And having since had only 2WD cars, including the FWD Alfa in Russia and any number of RWD BMWs in heavy snow and ice, it's never actually proved to be an issue in practice.
So, based on my experience, I wouldn't myself rule any car off my list just because it didn't have 4WD. It simply restricts my available choice.
For the same reason, I don't rule any car off my list just because I can't have it with green paint or turd-coloured seats! In fact, out of some 20 or so cars, I've only had two green cars, neither of which had brown seats, and only two cars with brown seats, both of which were dark blue.
I actually could have had the 440i in dark green, but it would have added the thick end of 10% to the entire cost of the car which wasn't worth it.

I can understand the need for 4wd if the only other option is fwd. The ST has rather nasty torque steer and I'd forgotten how little I enjoy that sensation as I've been in RWD for so many years now. On the other hand I've never wished any of my RWD cars were 4wd. As has been pointed out its more to do with being on the wrong tyres then anything else, unless of course you're running 500hp plus which I can imagine gets interesting with just the rear end in charge of deployment.

The M140i would benefit from AWD, along with better rear suspension, even in the dry it lacks composure on a twisty road. I'm clearly some sort of opposite of whatever a "hand" is behind the wheel. A driving foot? An elbow? I hardly ever use full throttle. And on UK roads in a performance car, how often can you? When I do, the world comes towards you very, very fast. And in the dry, the tyres take it. But how fast are you all driving if you need to use full throttle in a performance car in the wet or not in a straight line? But I do agree with Ed. FWD v AWD = AWD every time. Torque steer is not a nice sensation.

Since I’ve had the PS4s fitted , torque steer is no where near as bad as it used to be mine was not designed to have this much power and torque, so I can. Forgive it, but the Mini Cooper s (57 plate) I drove torque steered like an absolute pig and that only had what 190bhp. Now hot hatches are putting out 300bhp + , I can definitely see the argument for 4wd . The Cupra I drove was very impressive - coming out of a corner , full throttle* , and it just dug in and fired you off . In my mates 140i you’d definitely have to be more careful. And in the wet , it’s much more prominent in being careful with the loud pedal * Pete , I use full throttle on pretty much every journey unless it’s pouring with rain . And if I had a Cupra or Golf R , I would use full throttle on every journey
