Not overly sure that'll be the route I take yet. I've had a play on carwow to get some quotes and got mixed results. All the A3 2.0TFSI quattro ones came back as FWD 1.5 ones. Weird. Managed to get quotes on A250 4Matic, even though it's not on the Mercedes website. Also weird. The S3 was missing the other day but reappeared last night, so I've done one for that. The site tells me that Audi and VW are not taking orders for the TT and Golf R respectively so I couldn't do either of those. The A35 was configurable and I've had a couple of quotes back with around 10% off. Mercedes Brooklands offered 0% discount so I have no fucking clue why they're on there! I’d be surprised if the A3 comes with a 2.0, I imagine the 1.5 TFSI has replaced it. Odd about the TT and Golf R unless they’re due for replacement soon (Golf 8 is due later this year). Availability of certain models is still a bit up in the air due to WLTP which could mean certain models are not actually available.

VW have a backlog of post WLTP Golf Rs and a big order book, so they’ve stopped any new orders until mid Feb at the earliest. I bet they won’t take many more after that as the MK8 production should start mid year. Golf R won’t be until 2020 though.

Seen a lovely S3 on AT, but Audi's pisstaking interest rate for used vehicles (11.3% APR) adds 10 grand on to the price if I finance it through them. Any way around that? Order a new one?! Bank loan? Tesco will lend you up to £25k at 3.0% APR. John has mentioned Lombard finance who offer various car finance options with rates of under 5%

Great spec, but no way is a used S3 worth £40k.

Fairly basic spec, but the FL cloth seats are nicer than the pre FL and it has a panoramic roof and reversing camera. I didn’t choose an S3 when the price was broadly the same, so clearly have a favourite but a similar age R will be £10k less than the S3. Smallish deposit + Tesco loan = even more of a saving and you’d own it at the end so would have equity for the next car. Or extend the term leaving you a balance to pay if you trade it in earlier. They’re not quite as good value as they were 6 months ago, thanks to how difficult it’s been to get a new one. If you’d ordered one back in June, you’d still be waiting. That’s good for us, it would cost you more to buy ours now from a dealer than we paid for it New. This is just one example, there are plenty of others and you’d need to find one with DCC. 2018 Golf R

That Golf R just looks so much better than the over blinged Audi. Just looks at the different seat designs for example.

There are some idiotic adverts on AT. There's a Golf with 19" Spielberg wheels and the description says "This car comes with 18in Cadiz Alloy Wheels with 225/40 R17 Tyres"! They must have been a tight fit on those rims!

And by all accounts drives better too Don't think there's a great deal in it since the A3 was facelifted. The Brummie that annoys Twelfth thinks the S3 is nicer as a day to day car but says the R is a bit more fun to drive. I remember watching that, no idea what the spec is other than ones a manual and the other DSG. I think the steering is still better on the R and the S3 doesn’t tighten its line in the same way when you exit a roundabout on full throttle. The Golf was more comfortable, but it had DCC so there may be nothing in it when specced the same. As always, you need to drive them and see which suits you best.

I've looked through all the f/lift Golf R ads just now and there's nothing floating my boat. I only checked the ones with photos and silver 19s, as I don't like the 18s or the black wheels and didn't find a single one that mentioned DCC. Seems most of them had a sunroof instead which makes the handling worse! A couple that had leather were £35K+. You’ve got time though haven’t you? I’d try one alongside the other options so at least you know what you want. It’s easy to change Prets from black to Silver.

When I was looking , a lot of used Rs were poverty spec as I imagine they were all of those expired lease deals at stupidly cheap prices

Yes, but you’d need to pay off the balloon before you could sell it. If that’s the case, why not pay it off and then hold onto it until you decide / find what you want and then sell it or trade it in?

You could pay off the balloon with a personal loan from Tesco (there are other providers) at 3%apr and then finance the new car on HP in the future with the full value of the current car as a deposit. you'd effectively have two loans running alongside each other for a while but you will pay less over the period with a rate as low as 3%.
There are lots of September registered cars on the VW website - nothing there take your fancy?

What happens if you get to the end of a PCP, the car's worth more than the GFV but you don't want to keep it? Is the only option to sell it privately, pay off the balloon and keep the change? In theory the dealer should pay you the difference. With me, I ended the PCPs early on the Ka and C-Max and the cars were both valued at more than the GFV, so the difference was "given" to me as part of the deals to change cars

^ I think you're most probably right. The general sales patter is that at the end of the PCP you can either hand the car back and owe nothing (no mention of any payments if it's valued at more than its GFV) or put its residual value into a new PCP (or buy the car for its GFV, of course - which I did with the Fiesta)

I've contacted Portsmouth Audi about the expensive S3 to say I'm interested but stressed I'm not happy about their finance offers. I expect I'll find out over the next couple of days if they can do anything about that... There are lots of people who do car finance at way below dealer rates. I mentioned in another thread that the BMW dealer told me that they had a deal with BMW where they could not go below 8.9% apr - that's just padding out their pockets in some way. When my wife got her car the dealer was adamant that 7.9% was the best they could do but other BMW dealers were doing 5.9% and some were down at 4.9%. Audi dealers always seem very expensive for used cars. Black Horse (Lloyds) do car finance and there are lots of others around the 6.9%apr mark at the moment. I would phone or complete the Lombard questionnaire and see what they can do. Admiral are doing rates from 5.9%: www.admiral.com/loans/car-finance?mediacode=CFGGC&gclid=Cj0KCQiAvebhBRD5ARIsAIQUmnkVcwy1ick1me6XT5YUy2Cb3V9BO2ILFNHpFAx6FzcQSzkqJK5WqQIaAmeSEALw_wcB
