At one point it was a lot more than 58k. That is a very good looking car,and relatively great value. The question is these depreciation disasters often bottom out ,but will it bottom out at say 35k or 20k ? And what are you comfortable with losing money wise ?

The PCP GFV after 4 years is £23K and whilst more than I would like to lose, it isn't a disaster. Maybe more relevant is £540 road tax £800 insurance (and possibly fitting a tracker) and £900 extended warranty cost p.a. after it is 3 years old.
New, this car was a whisker under £100K just 18mths ago.

Whatever the finances, it is as nice as a very nice thing. The biggest bath has already been taken by the first owner and it is now an awful lot of car for the money.

I'd rather have 2 or 3 fun cars, but if you're happy with it, go for it. I guess you're not 100% comfortable with the idea though or you wouldn't have asked the question.

Don’t forget the M Tax on servicing and consumables.
I can’t see if it has the the Competition pack? That would be my preference, for the exhaust not the extra power, but it is a lovely looking car with a good spec and I don’t think the depreciation will be too horrendous. It’s starting to look a touch dated inside, as it’s pretty much 2 generations of BMW behind now, but not everyone will agree with me and the full leather will make it feel very special.
As always, you need to drive it and see whether it suits you and how/where you drive.

Looks very good, but I am sure that you can afford it (I can't). Needs a different plate though....... EDIT: Group 50 insurance, 20.3mpg urban, 28.5mpg average

Having recently completed a motorway trip with an average speed of exactly 70mph and consumption of exactly 50mpg, I know the M6 will be a bit of a shock. I reckon high teens as an average and probably mid 20's at best. The car has the 3 year service pack so 18 mths of no cost and then full shafting thereafter.
I have decided the M4 is too hard and uncompromising for a daily driver but I still have a soft spot for the C63 which is a bit softer (relative to an M4) and I am drawn to a new E53 which is about £10K more discounted but is brand new. On the other hand it's a Mercedes and I somehow don't feel as much at home sitting in one as I do the BMW - then there's the 4WD question. The RS4 and RS5 are too expensive, with ex press cars (not that I'd want one) sitting at nearly £60K and over a year old (and then there is our crap local dealer). The new 4 series is a good 2 years away and nearer 3 before discounts get interesting enough to get me looking, by which time my car will be over 7 years old. Nice problem to have, I know.

Mine does 32-33mpg at an indicated 80 leptons on the motorway, but around town it’s about 20.

This post + the original question = probably not something you should be spending over £50k on. I was struggling because what I thought I should want (E63) wasn’t getting me excited enough to spend that amount of money on and deep down I knew it wasn’t right for the majority of the driving I do. It was different with the 750, I had serious ‘want’ as soon as I saw it and that just got stronger to the point I didn’t want anything else after driving it.

In that case I should just hang on to mine! Nothing on the market is getting me really excited. Something like a 4WD M4 or a 4WD C63 is, I suppose what I would consider my perfect car as long as they have a proper comfort mode. An M5 would get me excited too but just too expensive....and my daughter would really like 4 doors.

You can use a bit of man maths and add the difference between 12 months of 435d and M6 depreciation + running costs to boost the budget a bit too!

Really good looking car, but I have very little ‘want’ for one.

Have dealers improved in any meaningful way? As a neighbour to an Alfa owner it put me off for good.

So do I but I can imagine the depreciation hit will be twice that if the M6. The M6 is an utterly superb car but is it worth the extra over what you have? In the real world the extra performance over the 435d isn’t going to be especially accessible so your going to be sinking a lot of dosh into a comfier coupe. The Alfa appeals but I think realistically it’s only worth investing in a couple of years when depreciation really hits them but before they become a modern classic.

That echoes a lot of my feelings at the moment. I did look at Panameras but I don't want an out of warranty , moderate mileage car which is all I could afford. As for the extra money, it's £30K to change which is an awful lot of money in the cold light of day!

They’re coming down in price quite nicely. All the packs (so voodoo cruise, ceramic controls, ventilated seats etc) plus M Sport exhaust and B&W speakers. link

Regarding the original question: the M6 Gran Coupe is a very good-looking car IMO and that particular one is a nice colour. If you like the idea of it, then remember that you're only here once and it's only money. I suspect it boils down to 'want' versus 'need', as what you currently have is clearly very nice. Your profession makes you predisposed to looking at most purchase decisions through a financial prism but it's hard to put a price on sheer desire or lust. Apparently! If you want it enough, you know what to do.

Just another thought but is it worth waiting to see whether the presence of the new 8 series in the range has an effect on values? There could be a glut of 6’s come on to the BMW Used scheme as their owners are persuaded to trade up to the new top of the range model.
