My youngest has had her 04 KA now for 20 months, it has never let her down but we have come to the conclusion that we need to stop spending money on it, it's had a new steering rack and battery and now the wipers and squirters aren't working; it's not the fuse so likely the stalk unit, plus the headlight is full of water, there is an intermittent engine management light, fuel consumption is noticeably worse than it has been and the fuel gauge has a life of its own! It is MOT'd until March but it scraped through with an advisory on rust on the suspension mounts (quite common on KA's) and generally it's a bit of a heap. She finishes her first year at uni next week and starts a year placement in January and will need a car, we just couldn't trust the KA and didn't want to plough more money into it. Back in June I took an order for a brand new Sandero; June was just as the new WLTP testing was starting to affect some of Renault and Dacia car orders; Sandero SCe being one! Finally the Sandero in question was collected this weekend; 6 months later! The person collecting her new Sandero traded in an 03 K11 Micra (last of the old shape before the bubbly one) probably the best Micra to have; 1 owner, full Nissan service history, 3dr 1.0 16v, purpley blue, 48 k miles, A/C, electric windows and remote central locking (none of which the KA has) MOT till end of March with a few advisories but nothing major, a far more modern and efficient engine than the 1.3 CVH in the KA so better on fuel and lower RFL. Bodywork and interior are very good with only a few minor marks All for the princely sum of £300, the KA can be scrapped for £118 so all in costing £182 and I'm certain it will go on for longer and at far less cost than any KA of a similar age. I have a happy daughter!

Bargain!
My eldest is 17 in 2 weeks time and whilst he’s going to have lessons, he has no interest in getting his own car as he thinks he won’t need one in 18months time when he goes to University.
I think he’s mad. It would save me a lot of money in depreciation/running costs plus a lot of my time, so (and he knows) I’d happily buy him something decent.
It was so important to me I had two jobs to fund all the running costs when I was 17/18.

Well done, that’s pretty much one of the best examples of bangernomics at work! The last of that shape Micra are much more reliable than any Ford of the age.

My nephew is 17 next year and wants one of the new model Audi A1s when they are released (apparently the Polos are too common now, everyone has one). Bless him!

Looks like a result, it has to happen sometimes.

Usually the MD wants his "cut" if you buy a trade in off the company however he's let me have it for what we gave for it, which is very unusual for him. I could get £700 easy for it if I put it up for sale.

We spent nearly that much on a bin this week.
It is a nice bin, but it won’t take 4 people to the coast.

The plastic on the lower front bumper looks like it's gone grey; try a bit of Autoglym bumper restorer on it. Apart from that it looks excellent !

I think I would prefer the Micra to a Yaris. That is a great buy.

Great buy.
I loved the early bubble ones in 1 litre form - eminently thrashable and surprisingly fast. Felt pretty indestructible too, even with nearly 100k on the clock.

Just given it a spruce up, I thought about tackling the grey bits but at the moment I can't be arsed, maybe tomorrow. Daughter is over the moon, she is home from uni on Friday so will get the train to my work and she can then drive it home. She has named it Nigel.

Can't fault that. I tried and tried to get Jo to buy a Micra years back instead of what she ended up with (Corsa), but she wouldn't stand for it.

Not the most exciting car so they suffer with a bit of an image problem and are associated with the elderly; the person who traded this one in is in her 80's. However oddly my youngest has always liked them, she says they are cute, she wanted one when we were looking originally and we got the KA, she is very happy but hasn't seen in yet; apart from photo's.

I’d rather have a Micra than a Corsa.
Lindsay was interested in the idea of a Corsa a few years back until she drove it, think we got about 1 mile before she turned it around and went back to the garage. Ended up getting the Swift Sport.

That’s an incredible buy. Age has been kind to the Micra, it still looks fresh. If she gets bored with the looks she can always upgrade it with one of those kits that make it look like a 1950s Jag.

Great bangernomics.
Like Martin, mine are 17 this school year and T1 has already had his first lesson at M-B World. He's not got any car aspirations and gave me a spec for a laptop that looks like it could run the whole NASA as his Christmas wish list.

It does look tremendous value for money and, being built in the North East, will be completely reliable.

Yep. Mitsuoka Viewt. Horrendous looking things. There are 2 official Mitsuoka dealers in Europe; Monaco being one and the other is local to me; 7 miles away according to Google maps, I pass it weekly on the way to my day off, dog walk!

I used to love those at enterprise, would take a proper thrashing with sweet engine and gearbox. Turning on the Aircon was like applying the brakes!
Great buy!

I'm pleased you gave me the name - I went round to Greggs the other lunchtime and one of those was marked up sold on a nearby secondhand car lot. I vaguely knew it was based on a Micra but couldn't identify it. A Viewt apparently. It looks like something Inspector Morse would drive after the latest round of police funding cuts kick in.

I had a 1 litre auto as a courtesy car many many years ago. The aircon practically brought the car to a halt unless I manually held in a lower gear.
