The ULEZ zone comes into force in April 2019. The Black Whanger, my beloved R1, does not comply so at an additional £13/day it will have to go. Several times this year I've looked to replace it but NOTHING is as good looking to my eyes aside from the MV Agusta which I just couldn't trust on the reliability front for a daily commute all year long. I'm really attached to the R1: it's like a part of me and plays a big part in my day. I'm gutted to be honest. So on the list are: 2015+ BMW S1000RR 2017+ Honda Fireblade 2016 GSX-R 1000 (one that currently leads the pack on colour scheme and price) 2017 Ducati Panigale (but reliability scares again) If I'm honest the BMW should win as they are king of the Superbike hill at present but the Suzuki is nice in original GSX-R colours. The Duke looks great but a bit bland in all white. However the GSXR knocks lumps off the others in price terms and in my eyes is equal first with the BMW on colour scheme.
Can you go and ride them all? Also is there any risk that they will change the emission limits on the ULEZ - how close to the limits are each of the bikes?

Weird, to my eyes the Honda looks like a 125, there's a complete lack of bulk to it. Also, the BMW reminds me of Gert Frobe (Goldfinger) in Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines, wearing a spiky helmet and a monocle.
The Ducati might look better in red.

How do the 959/960 compare with the others? It's been a long time and I am completely out of touch.

The Ducati ad says it's an automatic. Is that right?

The Ducati ad says it's an automatic. Is that right? Ha ha. No way. It does has a quick shift so clutchless up changes at full throttle (but not down shifts).

Vespa. You know it makes sense. My first bike was a C100 Lambretta so I can’t disagree outright

The Blade isn't showing for me, so either you've already bought it or someone else has! As for the others; always had a soft spot for the big Beemer, but that paint scheme is just too fussy and not special enough for me in those pics. I can see why it's a contender though. The Duke falls in to the same category as an MV for me, for the same reasons. For price, and most other criteria to be honest, it's the Gixxer all day long for me. The fact it's the cheapest is simply a nice bonus.

I'm surprised that bikes are included in the emissions thing. It has to be far more environmentally friendly to ride a bike (irrespective of its engine size or emissions) than drive a car or van into a big city

Yep, the ‘Blade is sold already.
I’ve never been a fan of BMW motorcycles as I associate them with old men (which I am now) and the S1000RR is the one which has changed that image by wiping the floor on the Road Racing scene (real roads not closed circuits). The truth remains that in Suzuka 8hrs (the most important full factory single bike race in the world) the highest placed non Japanese bike this year was the 13th placed factory BMW.
So the Suzuki is the winner. When I consider that I ride in all weathers it makes more sense to spend £4k less on a bike that’s just as capable.

Looks like BMW bike design has gone the same way as the cars? Great engineering wrapped in a poor design.

Pani or the Bimmer. I funded a few 1299 for a customer who then modifies them and he’s not had a problem though he’s hardly commuting into zone 1 each day. Without being a boring bastard but surely the winner is whichever doesn’t give you horrific backache after an hour.

The Suzuki has taken a lead as I called up today and they sent me a video. It has some scratches on the tank which is irritating but some Suzuki touch up paint will do it.
Tomorrow I’m doing a video of mine after I’ve cleaned it thoroughly. The dealer will offer it to the trade as it’s classed as high mileage at 26k or whatever it has (I have no idea as I never have that display on). I told him what I’d want for it.
Now you’re all going to go mental that I’ve not had a test ride or seen it in the metal but I’ve done it before with bikes. They’re kind of hard to thrash and they’re a reputable dealer. I’ve read up on the 2016 GSX-R and this one has some nice Yoshimura bits on it so there will be no surprises in store if a deal is done.

Trust in the vendor has to be at least as good and no doubt you know what to expect from the bike itself.

I have lived here virtually all my life and I can confidently say I have never had deep fried cock. A haggis or sausage supper could be argued to have a resemblance though.
EDIT: I should also add that I have never had a deep fried Mars bar either. However deep fried (I prefer breadcrumbs) cod in Cromars in St Andrews is a very pleasant experience.

I've not been in there since it was P&Ms but have you tried the Tail End down near Tescos?

Update thus far:
The dealer wouldn't offer me enough of a deal on the GSX-R with marks on the tank based on a valuation of mine that I would achieve if I parked it on the corner with a cardboard sign on it. To be fair his valuation of the R1 wasn't far off but I felt I wanted at least 10% more. I've advertised mine and will see what this weekend brings with an asking price reduction strategy to follow thereafter.
Anyway, been reading more on the 959 Panigale and that looks like it might make the cut so I shall pop by the Ducati dealer in York Road Wandsworth to have a sit-on (I worry they're a little too small for lanky me). A V-Twin will make a change from a gazillion straight 4s over the past 3 decades.

Sit on done. Not too small but understandably skinnier than the R1.
I’ve also remembered these are built by VW/Audi now so I can worry less about reliability than I was.

Update again: The Black Whanger is sold - some Slovak from Coventry coming on Saturday. Tomorrow I should receive a video of this Panigale 959. It's so standard it hasn't even had a tail tidy fitted! (it has got a bigger screen and crash bungs on it though). They're about to stop production of these so I'll probably have to lock it up on the streets of St James' www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201803295050555

Very nice though and a Ducati should always be red!
