The Montego doesn't surprise me, they were utter piles of shit! The RS6 Plus surprises though, I'm sure AT had a few on there last time I looked.

My dad had a few Montego saloons as company cars. The first was an early A-reg 2.0HL that replaced a Wedgie Princess, and what a dramatic improvement that was. This was followed by a D-reg 1.6 Mayfair and an F-reg MG just before the facelift that added power steering. I drove the MG a few times and the non-assisted steering was so heavy that my mum wouldn't drive it as it was such a handful to park. Dad bought the MG when he retired as it was offered to him at a special price by his employers who bought their staff cars outright.

Mine comes up as a 140PS version, even though it's a 150. I just let it go with the insurance company rather than get into some convoluted conversation about it...

The VW TL is a derivative of the unitary bodied type "4" not the type 3 so they are only out by a bit which for some people is close enough. They rusted much more than the older type 3 as the double panels were poorly sealed and the water got in very easily.

I had 2 Montego Countrymen. My first 2 cars. Loved them So did my mother. Although I think they were just called Montego estates back in the day. The Countryman was the name of an end-of-the-line special edition.
The first was an F-reg 2.0SLX auto in BRG that my father managed to finagle from the official Wimbledon fleet at the end of that year's tournament (with the light at the right angle, you could still see where the crossed rackets logos etc had been removed). She liked that so replaced it three years later with a new J-reg 2.0 D "Countryman" in a silver-grey metallic, despite my best efforts to get her to try anything else. Mercifully that turned out to be a proper "Friday" car with endless problems and a propensity for being smacked into by other drivers, so she didn't keep it long for switching to a Volvo 940.

I think for early 90's Rover almost every day was a Friday.
Mine were both 2.0D Countryman. Metallic red was stolen after about 2 weeks and parted out by some sort of prolific gang. I had a BRG one to replace it. Both were ex company cars from my dad's work. As an 18 year old a sunroof, electric windows and velour were an intoxicating mix. Fast and economical too.

Ooh...velour. I remember that the Mk2 Golf GL I had as a student had squidgy velour seats. I think it remains the only car I've had that was equipped thus.

My parents had 2 Montegos and I had 1. They had a 1.6L when I passed my test, followed soon after by a 2.0HL that was like a rocket after the 1.6 and clearly had better suspension and brakes (non-vented discs on the 1.6). The 2.0 became mine eventually and was traded at 125k miles for an MG Maestro.
A few years later I bought a 2.0GTI to replace the Maestro.
I loved them all, even the GTI.

My mum moved her Visa 11e onto my sister and got a 3 year old BRG MG Montego, which was fantastic in comparison, especially when you put your foot down. Somehow I managed to blag it for a 2 week holiday with a mate to the French Alps when I was 18 and she'd only had it a few weeks. Great holiday.
We had a 2.0D Countryman as a pool car and I quite liked it, it was a lot nicer to drive than the 1.6 Sierra which was the alternative, especially as the Sierra didn't have PAS.

A family friend had one back in the '70s. I seem to recall it was a soft, comfortable, squidgy cruiser, although the nylon upholstery seemed tacky, even back then. I should add... I recently read a fascinating history on these on how the original proposal was being designed in the UK, to wear Sunbeam and Humber badging. It was to be an upmarket car with six and eight cylinder engines and wood & leather trim. Then the parent company passed the project to the French, who binned the original design and produced a cheaper design, with four cylinder engines, a more simple suspension setup and cheaper trim.

Another British 'what might have been' story - 1960's and 70's seems littered with British design and engineering talent that was squandered due to political reasons, budget reasons and who knows what else. That 70's interior is very appealing today, even if it seems like the driving experience is unlikely to be - at least you could cruise along trying to pretend it had a V6 and IRS! But look at the asking price for a survivor?!

My parents had an Avenger - just a 1300 DL - when I passed my test and it had an attractive basic charm to it. It also had the best gearchange out of any car I've ever driven. It was a sad day when my dad blew the engine up and they replaced it with a Datsun Cherry
